Hi, I’m so new to all of this and have not looked on online as I hear it’s so confusing.

i have had a lumpectomy just over 2 weeks ago and hopefully start radiotherapy when results come in.

Can anyone tell me the side effects? Also can I drive to treatments? I will be having 3 weeks of treatment if all goes to plan.

    Hi

welcome to the most helpful site on the internet.  I'm sure you don't want be here but there is fabulous support and information when you need it.

I have just, yesterday,  completed 15 sessions of radiotherapy.  We are all different but I drive myself to all my sessions.  My drive was just over an hour each way.  And then parking and getting to unit.  I coped well.  I am, and was for the last couple,  tired. But still managed to take my self.  And I am quite mobility challenged at the moment.  But it would be worth having a back up plan for if you get too tired towards the end.

No major side effects.  I started moisturising my breast twice a day a couple of weeks before radiotherapy started.  And continued throughout and will continue for at least another 3 weeks. I used Aveeno and 24hr e45.  I was advised I could apply a thin coat of moisturiser after my shower and provided soaked in well that would be ok before RT.  When I got dressed after I slapped loads of aveeno on.  Then loads of e45 at bed time.  My skin has not yet broken down although my scars, and there are many, are red.

I did not find this treatment too bad.  Good luck and I'm sure you will be fine xx

    Hi

It will be a little while before you start radiotherapy, planning etc has to be done. So by then you should be back driving.

I went for radiotherapy for 20 sessions 12 years ago. I drove there and back every day and it was 45 minutes there then back.

Then I'd come home and chill out. It was a summer like last year so usually fell asleep on my Sun bed. I didn't work, I was lucky and had 6 months full paid leave.

The skin under the breast got sore, it sort of split, and my nipple got rather sore but nothing drastic.

This time I've got the same journey but I'm 12 year older so I'll see how I get on.

I can only tell you how it affected me and we are all different. My skin tans easily and rarely burns in the sun.

So take it as it comes, use the creams suggested and make sure you have a good CD for the car and a good book go waiting.
