Hi all,

So I've just met my oncologist and have been told I'm having the two new drugs herceptin and perjeta along side docetaxel and carboplatin, I know there lots of combos out there but wanted to know if anyone else has experienced these and any advice on side effects or things i can do?

:-)

  • Hi

I can't answer your question about these drugs as I don't have experience with them but I noticed that your post had gone unanswered. By replying to you it will bump your post back to the top of the page where hopefully it'll be seen by people who do have the experience you're looking for. I'm also tagging my fellow Community Champion as she helps to look after this group and may be able to help you further.

I do know that this group has a monthly chemo thread so you could perhaps post your question in that. To find it look for the title 'June Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Chat'. Alternatively if you type the names of the drugs in the search bar in the group it will bring up older posts where that drug has been used. You could have a read of the ones you think are relevant and respond with further questions if you have any.

When you feel up to it, it would be really useful if could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Wishing you all the best with your treatment

Hiya i had docetaxel but none of the others as my breast cancer was triple negative.

So i can only really advise on the docetaxel, this really wallopped my immune system, so make sure you are careful about visitors who may be or may have been ill. Have antibacterial hand wash available and ask people to use it. My mouth became a little sore too so get yourself a soft tooth brush and some mouth wash (i was given extra strong mouthwash from the chemo unit)

Most important thing is treat yourself to a thermometer and keep a watch on your temperature. If it reaches 38 and above or 36 and below it could be a sign of infection so ring your chemo unit for advice. They may ask you to go in and they do a blood test to see if you have an infection.

The post mentioned is June Breast Cancer chemotherapy chat there may be ladies in there who may be able to give you more advice.

Keep asking questions there's always someone about to give advice and support xx

I have stocked up on the antibac, my boyfriend is getting antibac everytime we go anywhere lol haven't even started treatment yet but don't want anything delaying things.

I'm due to start my 1st cycle on Monday 17th June, so trying to get everything sorted as in wig and beanie hats if I need them and baby shampoo etc.

All advice already has been so helpful

    Thank you

    Hi

I had (4) EC then (12) Herceptin and Paclitaxel then just Herceptin (14).

Herceptin is a biological drug and is a real game changer for HER2 positive cancers, I am very glad to have it and I don't have any side effects except being hyper then tiredness but I put that down to the other drugs they give with it. I've had 18 over the last year and a bit and my last one is tomorrow. I have my heart checked every 3 months, it's basically a detailed, long ultrasound.

    Here's a blurb from MacMillan:

    Trastuzumab (Herceptin®)

If the cancer is HER2 positive, your doctor may give you trastuzumab (Herceptin®). This belongs to a group of drugs called targeted therapies. Trastuzumab stops the HER2 protein from making the cancer cells grow. You usually have trastuzumab every three weeks for a year.

The side effects are usually mild, but can include:

    • a headache

    • a high temperature (fever) and chills

    • feeling sick.

Some people may also have a drug called pertuzumab (Perjeta®) with trastuzumab. These drugs may be given before an operation to shrink a cancer.

Occasionally, trastuzumab can affect the heart. You will have tests to check your heart before and during treatment.

Good luck with your therapies! All the best x

    Hi Maggiemee,

Thank you, I've been told that having herceptin and perjeta together before surgery has great results. I'm also have doxetaxel and carboplatin.

I'm not sure about the side effects of the doxetaxel and carboplatin tho, I know every one is different. Dr said I'm having the combo where hair loss isn't definate but a possibility.

It's great to hear your journey and herceptin has worked well for you, they said I will prob continue with it after surgery too.

Hoping for as little side effects as poss

    :-)

Thank you again for replying and hope all is good with you x
