Hi,

Sorry if this has been covered already,  but could I ask roughly how long everyone who has needed it, has had to wait between diagnosis and surgery?

Personally i found a lump at the end of April, biopsy,  mammogram and ultrasound on 13th may, and diagnosed on 15th.

Thankfully the constant said it's small and treatable! So yay! Slight smile

I had an MRI last Thursday and have next appointment with consultant tomorrow.

But I have no idea how long it normally takes till surgery and its terrifying me.

Thank you in advance,  and sorry if it been covered before

Hi, I had my biopsy on the 8th February, results and diagnosis on the 15th Feb, then surgery 12th March and surgery results 22nd March. It all happened quickly, but waiting for the surgery and then results still felt agonisingly slow! Also, I was told my surgery date when I was given the biopsy results so things might be a little different at your local hospital.

Do you know what type of surgery you're having? Lumpectomy? Mastectomy?

I was terrified before my surgery too, but breast surgery is very safe and all the staff at the hospital were lovely and very reassuring xx

Thanks for your reply Slight smile

I'm having a lumpectomy,  so I'm hoping for quite a quick recovery time? And dont know yet if I have to have any other therapies after yet, hopefully will know tomorrow.

  • Hi

You obviously as yet don't know the rest of your treatment plan as this depends on the type of BC you have and whether you will need chemo, but if you click on my name you will see the timeline of dates from my diagnosis for all my treatment and follow ups.

I had ER+ cancer, so didn't need chemotherapy so the dates are good for your WLE (wide local excision / lumpectomy). Then if you are ER+/ no spread to lymph nodes, the rest of it will likely be a good indication for your time frame.

Some of us have an 'easy time' of the surgery and I was one of those - but naturally we all heal differently, so don't panic if you take a bit longer, it really is a bit of 'how long is a piece of string' scenario.

    Kindest wishes,

    Hi Hansy!

I had my SLNB three weeks after ultra sound-biopsy, then two weeks later had lumpectomy, followed by chemo and radiotherapy. I had Stage 1, Grade 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. The lumpectomy operation was ok, i went home same day, it was a little uncomfortable for a couple of days.

Let us know how you get on.

I had a lumpectomy 11 weeks ago today. I had a large lump removed plus total duct excision. I had my surgery at around 10am and left the hospital about 12 hours later. I had a very large lump removed, plus quite a sizeable piece of skin, so I have a big scar from that,  plus they cut around the base of my nipple to remove the major ducts.  It took about 2-3 weeks for the scar to feel fully 'closed' (so it wasn't extremely painful if I moved in the 'wrong' way or overstretched) The breast was very swollen inside and that has taken until a few days ago to fully subside. I still can't lay on my front and my breast is mildly painful a lot of the time but that is getting better every day. I have occasional intense shooting pains throughout my breast and also 'stabbing' type pains.

Also, I had a fair bit of muscle pain for a few weeks: my pec was particularly sore (I saw a massage therapist who told me they most likely had to cut the pec to access the lump) and the muscles under my breast and around my side ached until a few days ago.

The pain was intense at times, but I found I could manage with occasional paracetamol.

Pain aside, I had my surgery on a Tuesday and was able to get on with my normal routine within a couple of days. I just had to take things slower and rest more and avoid lifting, or over-stretching.

Good luck tomorrow, hopefully you'll get your surgery date xx

  • Seems to differ .  I had recall appt 3 weeks after first routine mammogram.  Had biopsy and results week after on 3rd of June.  Surgery not till 13th July due to surgeon and Radiographer holidays as I needed wire guided surgery.  Radiotherapy then in September.

  • Hi Hansy1612,

So good that yours is small and treatable:)

I think from reading these forums it differs a lot from place to place. I had my first diagnosis on 14th March and mastectomy on April 8th.

I've just started chemo last Tuesday I'll be having 4 cycles in(3 weekly) total + Herceptin, then Herceptin for another 13 cycles.

Will be thinking of you tomorrow, hope it goes well for you. Good to stay positive.

    Hi

I can understand how you feel, its scary waiting for all test results etc. I had my diagnosis on 29th April, its seems a very long time since that day .I have 3 areas that are low graded cancers in my left breast. Routine mammogram picked up one area, ultrasound and MRI picked up the other two. I had a meeting with my surgeon today and I am booked in for a mastectomy for the 19th June, still 3 weeks away. Wish it cold be done before, but the surgeon reassured me today that 3 weeks will not make a difference as the cancer is very early stages and very low grade. It seems a lot of people on the forum have had to wait.

Hope your appointment goes well tomorrow, keep us posted how you get on.

So update from consultant,  lenny (my lump) is approximately a inch in size, from the MRI data,  so I'm going to be getting chemo to shrink it first, the consultant wants to see me half way through (in 3 mths), and will operate after that.

Appointment with oncologist for chemotherapy info in 2 weeks Confused
