Hello all

I’ve had 4 AC chemo treatments - all fine and managed to work and lead a normal life.  Last Tuesday I had my first out of 4 Paclitaxel chemotherapy treatments.  I was fine until 19 minutes before the end when I needed the loo.  When I stood up I was very shaky and walked for 5 steps then collapsed.  My heart was 150 which is incredibly odd for me as i’ve always had low blood pressure and it has never been over 100.  I was sat in a chair with all the nurses running round me, I was injected with steroids and antihistamine.  I was there for 20 mins shaking all over and feeling a bit embarrassed then went back to my seat shaking uncontrollably for 2 hour.s then the doctor assessed me and said it would be fine to pump the rest of the Paclitaxel in. Afterwards I sat with my sister waiting for 1.30 hours for a porter which didn’t happen so the nurse got a wheelchair and I was helped into the chair and wheeled out.  I still couldn’t stand.  I was carried into my sisters car and shook uncontrollably all the way home, carried upstairs by my sister and husband to bed.  My 8 year old son saw the state I was in and asked me if I was dying.  I couldn’t walk to the bathroom by myself.

I wonder if it’s normal to be evicted from hospital after chemo  if you can’t stand up or fend for yourself.  I was too shaky to even have a cuppa.

its now bank holiday Monday and I’ve been back twice since the chemo last Tuesday once on Friday and yesterday because I turned yellow and had stomach cramps whenever I ate and the flu like aches.  Yesterday I saw the same doctor who’d assessed me during my reaction and I asked if it was common practice to let patients go home who couldn’t walk.  He said everyone reacts in different ways and I should be immune to a reaction next time.

I have an 8 and 2 year old and run a cafe that is very busy over this half term and I’m catering for 100 people for a private party at the Derby next Saturday which I need to be well for!!   Plus I’m selling my house and moving in 6 weeks and my fingers feel like they are blistered underneath and are painful when I touch anything....

i am pretty scared to go back for more chemo now

Has anyone else had a reaction like this and any advice?!

  • That all sounds awful ! I would speak to your oncologist , their secretary’s are usually good at helping you to speak to them .

Sorry but I think you have maybe over stretched yourself with your commitments . I was floored for at least a week with each of my chemo - I was on Dosetaxel. But nothing of the reaction you have had . I too think it’s disgraceful that you were sent home .

Speak to your GP too if you can .

Hope you get help and answers soon .

Thank you so much for replying Ruby Rose.  I’ve realised that I have taken on a bit too much so I’ve got someone to take over for me at the Derby.  Im relieved to be honest!  I’ve got a meeting with my oncology team the day before my chemo next week but my consultant is on holiday so hopefully all will be fine.  I’m so glad you haven’t had a bad reaction! Sending you love.  B

  • So sorry to read the poop time you are having

I too had Pac and reacted badly. I looked like a tomato and my onco after only 3 of 12 decided enough. He was mightily concerned

So ..... even though you may feel better now .... when you see the onco team do t down play how you felt. Tell them exactly as you have told us. They may need to cut the dose or rethink the plan

    Stay safe and accept help
