Porta Cath and neuropathy?

Hi everyone just wondered if anyone has had a Porta Cath fitted whilst suffering severe neuropathy  of hands and feet?? Has it worsened the neuropathy? My Oncologist and GP say it has been caused by the Chemo which was stopped a few months ago. Am now taking Herceptin and Pertuzamab drips 3 weekly plus daily Letrozole tablets. Have had my PIC removed and am booked to have the Porta Cath fitted on Friday. Very worried that my right dominant hand which is very painful will become worse. Any input will be gratefully received thanks.

I have a Porta Cath. I haven’t had any problems with it. I have slight neuropathy post chemo.  I have never heard any suggestion that they are related. I am still having her herceptin and perjeta through it, and taking letrazole.  I think you will be fine. Good luck. xx

  • Thanks for replying so quickly - I’ve found it’s getting worse over the last month and I sometimes wake up with the pain of it. I haven’t got a choice really as they can’t use my left. Good to hear you haven’t any problems with it. Have you been having Herceptin and Perjeta for a long time? I started a couple of months ago and am expected to have them for the foreseeable future.

Thanks again and all the best

Hi Jude. I have had 14 of 18 infusions. My oncologist also says that it’s the chemo that has caused the neuropathy although I must admit I have wondered if the ongoing petuzemab is contributing. I think it’s more likely to be that than the portocath. It could still be from chemo. I finished chemo last October but my nails are still falling apart so it’s definitely still in me!  The onco nurses have said that chemo side effects take a couple of years to go after a lot of treatment, and not necessarily even then. It’s nasty stuff. I hope your side effects settle down. I do think herceptin and perjeta are a lot kinder than a lot of our drugs, but still have side effects. xx

  • Hi Sandy thanks so much for the info - yes it is nasty stuff I’ve noticed my nails are hardly growing now since chemo! I think the Letrozole can also contribute to neuropathy, but yes most drugs have some side effects. I guess I’ll have to have it fitted on Friday or would have to have cannulas inserted every 3 weeks. I doubt it’s an option.

I’ll let you know how it goes - thanks again and all the best with your treatment.

    Jude xx

I really don’t think you will regret the port. I hardly know mine is there. I hope it goes well for you. xxx

  • Hi Sandy you were right ! I’ve had the port fitted and stitches removed the other day. Lovely to be free of dressings etc. Thanks for your support -  I hope you are ok and your treatments are going well
