Can anyone comment on the pros and cons of having a nipple reconstruction after a single side mastectomy and DIEP operation please?
Yes I can. I had a nipple reconstruction. All they do is give you a local injection. Then twist a piece of the breast around to make a nipple. Painless. Takes about half an hour. Then had tattooing done over a number of weeks. Just finished everything off nicely. Go for it.
Thank you for this reply, very helpful. Were you pleased with result? How long ago was this please?
Hi I had a nipple reconstruction last April. Mine was under a general anaesthetic but was really quick. It looked amazing straight away. I have needed 3 lots of tattoos but worth the slight discomfort.
Good luck

Hi Yosemite.
I had the nipple reconstruction in September last year, quick and not uncomfortable. First tattoo Jan and second one April.
I am really pleased with the result, I think it’s amazing what they can do!
Good luck for making your decision.
Hi
i didn’t get nipple reconstruction as I don’t have prominent nipples but I still got the tattoo and it’s very effective . They said if I want nipple reconstruction later it’s not a problem.
The nurse I had at the discussion appointment had went for tattoo then the following year she got the reconstruction.
decisions ! Decisions !

i love this post thank you for asking the question.
I had a mastectomy 4 weeks ago and got the all clear last week, i don't see my consultant again for 5 months when he said we will discuss making the new boob bigger or my old boob smaller and also nipple reconstruction.
I was adamant i didn't want anything else doing, i've had enough surgery etc.
But now i read this i'm thinking i like the sound of it.
So thank you xx
Had nipple reconstruction but the tattooing never lasted very long , So my advice research a good tattooist , slight discomfort but lasts for ever and looks fab .
Saves Going back time and time again .
Hope this helps Lucy xx
I must admit. I had mine done in 2012. Still looks pretty good it’s a big operation having a diep. But I would do it all over again. It will never replace what I have lost. But it’s given me my confidence back. Regards.
In all honesty after going through a diep it’s the least of your problems. It just finishes it off nicely. Go for it. Regards
