Hi, I’m new to the group. I had a mastectomy two weeks ago and have developed a seroma. Has anyone been through this and what helped to get rid of it.

First of all welcome to the best support network on the planet. Seroma is common after MX, nature hates a void. I had a seroma after mine. The best thing to do is to speak to your nurse. Depending on how big it is it may need draining, not painful just annoying

    Good luck

  • Hi Bibi - I had a seroma after my node removal in my armpit.  It's very common.  There should be some contact details in post-surgery information you were given about who/where to contact.  At my hospital they even have a seroma clinic (it's that common!).  But if you can't see any specific contact info, then get in touch with your Breast Care Nurse team.  I had mine drained twice at the clinic and once by the BCN.  You may need to get it done more than once but it gets less each time and your body eventually manages itself.  I didn't feel a thing as the area was still numb from the surgery.

    All the best

    Linda xx

    Patience and faith

As an add on to my reply last night, my seroma took 8 weeks, most weeks going twice a week, to drain and in total I had almost 2 litres drained off. I always know when it was building up and I sounded like a half empty hot water bottle

    Hi

i had aseroma.. I had mine drained 3 times in the 5 weeks post op (mastectomy and node removal) ... didn’t hurt as area was numb but the relief was immense!

I had to contact the Breast care nurses to make an appointment but believe each Hospital  works differently.. if you’ve not got a sermon number then call the bc nurses, I’m sure they’ll be able to point you in the right direction!

    Goo d luck!
