Hi everyone,
I’ve just had my lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy (2 weeks ago), just awaiting my letter/call from Oncology.
Waiting with bated breath! Trying to be patient but thought I’d try my luck here. Can anyone say how long they waited for their treatment to start? Or at least when they were informed about it?
Thank you,
Hi Nush82 welcome to the forum and glad to hear that at least the surgery is past for you.
I waited about 2-3 weeks but there was an easter break in that time so that held things up but I also think different hospitals in different parts of the country have different timescales for this. Hopefully not too much longer for you now.
At the next appointment you should get the results from the surgery and a treatment plan then dependant on what the Pathology has shown up.
The waiting between all these appointments is the pits and not easy to be patient sometimes.
Hope you get the appointment soon and please come back and let us know what the outcome of the plan is for you.
Sending very best wishes and some huge big hugs for now. xxxx
Hi , I had a very similar diagnosis to yours. I had a follow up appointment with the breast surgeon 2 weeks after the op but then it all seemed to grind to a halt.... So op on 24th Oct, follow up 8th November (which was a mix of great news and disappointing, because although there were no surprises in the pathology results (good news), I had expected that I'd get a treatment plan that day, whereas he just said that I'd get an appointment with an oncologist to discuss this.) Then a long wait, during which time I received my one year mammogram appointment for Nov 2019! It was maddening, I'd rush to the door every time the post came, desperate to see an NHS envelope! Eventually a letter came with an oncologist appointment on 5th December - originally, I thought I'd have started radiotherapy by then and be finished by Christmas.... Well no, not at all, another wait after the oncologist, finally got a phone call during the week before Christmas - had rads planning on 21st Dec and started 3 weeks treatment on 2nd January. I did start on Anastrozole (hormone therapy, usually for post menopausal women like me) on 6th December after the oncologist appt, so felt I was doing something, but I really wanted to get the rads over and done with.
Your expreience might be completely different, I think there are huge variations between areas, a bit of a postcode lottery! And I have no complaints about the care I've had, I think I just didn't know what to expect and had unrealistic expectations about how soon it would all happen.
Hope you get some news soon, good luck with it all and keep posting! Hugs, HFxx
Hi, thank you so much for your message. I have been trying not to run to the letterbox! Usually I let my little ones bring me the post so I’ve even been ruining their fun.
I can’t believe you had such a long wait. I understand we need time to heal in between the op and therapy but didn’t think it would such a long wait. I hope you were able to enjoy your Christmas knowing treatment would start in a couple weeks.
I was supposed to be on holiday from next week but my surgeon advised me not to travel. I was hoping it would have taken my mind off of the wait but now I am just torturing myself. Just trying to remember that I’m not the only one waiting and there are unfortunately many of us due for treatment. I can’t fault the NHS so far! Just have to have some faith and a lot more patience
xx
