March 2019 Breast Cancer Radiotherapy Chat Group

If you are having radiotherapy this month, this is the place to ask questions, get support and chat to others going through it at the same time. If driving daily don't forget to ask if they offer free parking, most do :). And keep lathering the lotions on your site, for weeks after too.

The Radiotherapy tips  thread contains all sorts of tips posted by breast group members to help you get through radiotherapy.

My tips are: drink plenty of water; use plenty of cream and for several weeks after (Aveeno was my favourite one); rest when your body tells you to; accept help and befriend the RT Team.

  • Hi and welcome to rads club! I finished on 22nd Jan but still pop in from time to time, always nice to hear people getting started and even better reaching the the finish. By the end of this month you'll be done! Good luck with it all, HFxx

Started my first session today. But before I went in, I had to collect the death certificate for my husband! So I was feeling pretty emotional before I even started. I was debating whether to postpone treatment for a couple of weeks to give myself time to cope with the immediate grief, but talking to family and friends, they told me that I had put myself last for the last few months, and now was the time to change that and put myself first. I did tell the radiographers so that if I suddenly burst into tears, they'd know why!

Anyway one down and 14 to go!

Well done .  Look after yourself.  Let's us know how you find it.  Mine should be starting as soon as I've healed.

  • , hooray you've finished, enjoy! Glad you can tick that off as done and dusted.

, I think your family are right, you need to do whatever is best for you now. You've started, one is done and you can count off the other 14. By this time tomorrow you'll be more than an eighth of the way through (sorry I'm a bit obsessed with counting off fractions - I found it helped to feel I was getting through them). I am glad you managed to tell the rads staff about your husband, much better they know that you are dealing with so much more than your radiotherapy at the moment. Is there a Macmillan Centre or Maggie's there for support and/ or therapies? Thinking of you and sending many gentle hugs, HFxxx

In some ways I'm glad I had the weekend without too much happening as it gave me time to consider what to do. My initial reaction was to ask for it to be deferred; but talking to my daughter and thinking it though I decided that I should proceed as planned.

I contacted my BC nurse today and had a chat with her, she was very supportive and told me to contact her if I wanted to chat to their counsellor at any point. There is also a Macmillan Centre at the hospital,  but they don't operate any therapies from there. They are currently building a brand new Cancer centre at the hospital, which will have facilities for additional therapies, but that won't be finished until well after I finish my treatments (I hope). I also plan to attend one of the pampering sessions offered locally, but have to wait to finish treatment for that. After being a carer for Mike for 2 years I think I will need a bit of pampering!
