Hi, I just wanted to share my experience of a right mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) which occurred almost two weeks ago. I was expecting it to be worse than it actually was, because of the published information I was reading about it.
I suspect that’s the case because there are big differences in mastectomy experience according to our individual shapes and sizes and the degree of axillary surgery. I’m slim built and 34c and had two nodes removed, so it may be that my experience may only be relevant to others of similar shape, but if it helps to allay anxiety for some, that makes me happy.
Pain: i managed with regular paracetamol post op and was discharged from hospital after the drain was removed (only about 10 or 20ml in it) and after one night. After a couple of days at home I didn’t even need much paracetamol. Over the scar & about 3cm either side, it’s numb. Discomfort rather than pain was my main sensation. Some tightness as well.
Seroma/haematoma: I had an egg shaped lump appear near the drain exit, on the 2nd and 3rd day post op but that dispersed. I’ve currently got very slight swelling on the side of my right chest just below the scar. It’s not uncomfortable though.
bruising: my right chest/upper abdo looked a bit yellow but that is fading now.
day to day stuff: I was able to shower the morning after the op with the drain. I could use my usual roll on deodorant as the scar was clear of my right arm pit. I could use my right hand and arm as normal throughout. I had full arm range of motion and I’ve done the BCC exercises with ease since. I’ve done most activities except heavy lifting. I was v tired in the first week post op, especially by the afternoon/evenings and needed early nights. I slept on my back with one pillow and slept well.
Underwear: I wore the softest vest top I have (an old m&s heat tech one that’s close fitting and has lower arm holes than my camisole tops) and my softie stayed in place in that. I then cut the wire out of the right cup of my old wonder-bra full effect plunge bra (a great tip from my BC nurse) and could wear that comfortably with my softie for several hours. I then bought some soft lace padded bralettes from sainsburies/Tu - which are great post mastectomy. And very pretty.
SLNB blue dye: I didn’t look blue or grey post op (my surgeon warned I might) nor was my chest area. My wee turned greenish on day 2 or 3 post op and quickly went back to normal.
Learning to love my scar: my dressing was minimal - so I got used to the scar shape and length quickly. Removing the dressing myself was easy as none of it was stuck to the wound. The gauze over my drain wound did stick a little but I loosened it with by dabbing some cooled boiled water using sterile gauze and then put a plaster over it until day 10 post op, when I removed it with the main dresssing. The skin has healed well. I’ve now bought some palmers oil to begin to massage my scar as my BC nurse suggested massage is a good way to help keep the scar flat. I’m also doing it as a self care measure and to help me learn to love my new smile-shaped scar :-)
So far I feel very lucky to be recovering this quickly and to feel this good about how it looks and how well I can function.
I get my SLNB results in a couple of weeks and I’m very much hoping all is clear, given much of 2017 was spent having chemo and radiotherapy for non Hodgkin lymphoma, so really hoping I can avoid that on this occasion.
Wishing all future mastectomy-facing ladies well with their surgery and speedy recoveries for all.
Hi ,
I'm due to have a mastectomy on 6th March... Will be having all my lymph nodes removed as we already know they're involved! Thankyou for writing about your experience, although, I was reading it 'with bated breath"... half expecting something gory to have happened to you! (I'm a bit of a wimp...I have quite a "sensitive disposition"!!) -it's reassuring to read such a positive post to be honest!
I'm so pleased that you're healing well...fingers crossed I'll be the same!
Thankyou for your kind wishes, all the best to you x

Hi GrannyAnny,
I had a Mastectomy and SLNB with 4 nodes removed, prior to my Surgery my Surgeon said "you will be surprised how little pain you have", I doubted him but he was right, I only took Paracetamol for a couple of days and after less than 2 weeks I was in the garden working, it felt a bit tight under my arm and across the chest but I did the exercises they advise and still do when it feels tight. So hopefully you will be ok too. Good post from Sam15.
Best Wishes,
Sharon.
Hi GrannyAnny,
i had some booked holiday, my surgeon was happy to fit surgery dates around it, I had a SNB first as the mammogram suggested no spread, then after my holiday the mastectomy with another node check (no spread at all) so she fitted the permanent implant. I did need the op repeated 30 hours later as I’d managed to bleed even behind the implant! I needed no chemo either!
Pain-wise the SNB was more sore than the mx, and I was tired but found it hard to rest, probably the continuing worry was responsible. After the mx I took regular paracetamol for a few days only, and slept lots (worry and cancer were gone!) and did the exercises religiously, went out for walks after the first few days and built up exercise tolerance, itching to get back to choir and yoga, I was back to choir within 2 weeks but yoga at around 12 weeks, with no weight bearing through my arms for a further few weeks. I’m now 73, was 72 when it all kicked off!
Hope all goes well for you all reading this and that these experiences help!
hugs xxx

Hi moomy, Thankyou to you too for sharing your experience... I've already had chemo (pretty brutal!) -my surgery is next week! Yikes!

Hi Granny Anny
Glad to be of some help. I even drove earlier this week for the first time to attend our drop in seroma clinic. The nurse there was great - very reassuring and also had ample time to listen to how I was feeling about everything. So lucky to have outstanding nhs care. All the best with your surgery next week. Let us know how you get on.
Thankyou ... Hopefully you'll continue to feel well!
I'll let you know how I get on! Yikes!!! ( I don't want to go!!! )

Hi
I just thought I'd let you know my surgery went ahead as planned...had single mx/full node clearance on 6th March...it went well by all accounts! My wound is massive...I was so shocked when I saw it -goes from the centre of my chest and across to my back! I was expecting a separate incision for my lymph nodes! I don't have a dressing on my wound! I have 2 drains in but managing to do my exercises! I feel much better than I envisaged to be honest...very tired tho!
(Sorry...I'm waffling!)
Hope you're well, Love GrannyAnny x
Hi granny anny
well done to you. . I tried to be mentally prepared for the size of the scar as I’d asked my surgeon and googled images (don’t necessarily recommend others to do that though). Mine turns up towards the armpit so that’s why I think of it as a smile!
The tiredness got better for me after the first week or so. Wishing you well with your continued recovery.
