Hi

I’m soon to start Radiotherapy for breast cancer and I’ve had conflicting info on what creams are and are not allowed to be used. Does anyone have any recommendations? Also can I use them before the treatment each day or should I leave it to after? And what about deodorants?

  • Hi

I used a gel I bought online called radiance cream for radiotherapy.  It was before I found the Macmillan site and it was quite expensive (£25+postage as far as I remember) - I used 3 pots of it.  But R1 & R2 cream I gather is available on prescription and others recommend aloe vera gel, quite cheaply available from somewhere like Holland and Barret.

They say not to use deodorant, but I did.  I use Perspirex (brand name) and I've used it for years.  It's a deodorant that you put on overnight and shower in the morning.  It's one which isn't needed every night.  I just use it on Tuesday nights and Friday or Saturday nights and I've never needed any other deodorant.  It's got Aluminium in it, but it's  sold in Boots, so I work on the principle that if it's able to be purchased in Boots then there can't be a link with cancer....  and here's a link to cancer research regarding deodorants.  I might have been ok using any normal deodorant as well, but the advice is not to use one.  I just did because I was only needing (due to the brand) to apply it twice a week and I didn't want to smell Slight smile

Creams - I applied first thing in the morning, about an hour before radio, straight after and again before bed.

    Hope this helps,

    Thank you for info

  • Hello

i was told any unperfumed moisturising cream so use E45. After my first week of zapping found its great to take a toiletry bag with my cream, deodorant and perfume then after treatment apply in the changing cubicle before going back to work, but then I have early appointments. My biggest issue is getting a gown which stays done up!

there is another thread on here with more advice - July radiotherapy group

    good luck

I was given a gown and told to take it home everyday and bring it back.  I would find one your happy with and take it home with you, we only have gown on for a 30 mins or so, makes a lot of laundry for the hospital, perhaps talk to them. I just returned my gown after my last zap.

Wish you well with the rest of your treatment

  • Hi Panana I was given a zip up shirt thing on my planning appointment to wear daily it has Velcro on the shoulders to expose your chest.

    hope all goes well

Hello lesleyhelen,  just been reading your post regarding deodorants,  I went on to your link for deodorants and found it very interesting. I tried to found a suitable product but everyone I looked at baffled me. I eventually found a roll on deodorant without aluminium, parabens and alcohol  and it for sensitive skin called Bionsen.

    I enjoy reading your posts
