Hello again group . I am going to have soon my first cystoscopy under local anesthesia. I had 2 already under general, but I went for a second opinion and found a nice urologist  doctor who said he can do the cystoscopy to check the bladder under local anesthesia. I hope all is clear and no tumors. Is it painful with local ? Any side effects after? I like to have your opinion , the ones who went thru a cystoscopy under local anesthesia. Thanks guys, hope all Is well !

  • Hi . I can give you the man's point of view for a flexi cystoscopy, but should be generally the same. I have had about 20 of these over the years and never had a problem. Usually painless going in as they apply some anaesthetic gel first. Slightly uncomfortable going in, but only because you are aware of it. Once in, you can relax and look at the screen. It can be quite reassuring when you can see a nice clear bladder for yourself. Stings a bit when weeing for a day or so afterwards, but not too bad. I hope it all goes well for you. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

    Hi Nicolett,

i can only concur with what rily has said.

I was absolutely petrified the first time I had a cystoscopy with local anaesthetic imagining a painful experience but far from it. There is  a little discomfort when the scope is going in but that’s all I’ve ever experienced. If anything the preparation when they clean you down below is possibly the worst bit but again it only lasts a few seconds.

The best bit of being awake is that you can see the inside of your bladder and get an instant result.

I’ve occasionally had a bit of stinging afterwards and you will need to drink plenty of water for 24-48 hours afterwards.

    Good luck

    Lucy x

  • Yep I agree with what Lucy and Rily says, I’ve had 15 (or it could be 16)  the only one that was a problem was the very first as I didn’t have a clue what to expect, since then not a problem. Best of luck x

  • Hi Nicolett

I had my one cystoscopy without any anaesthetic. My only tip is to relax when the scope is pushed into your urethra, don't tense up and keep your mouth open wide, it helps, as odd as it sounds.

I may appear to be listening but in my head I'm all at sea.

  • Totally agree CB I instinctively try not to tense up and find myself opening my mouth on initial entry to urethra too. It feels right. I don't think NHS give any anaesthetic, but possibly a topical one (?) for flexi cystoscopy. Suits me because then I can drive myself home afterwards. It's great to know results straight away, eyes on the prize! x

Hi Nicolett, agree with everyone else - I've only had 2 and best advice is to relax and drink lots of water afterwards - best of luck x

  • I was lucky, didn't have time to fret in advance as mine was organised as an extra on the day. It's a bit undignified (like gynae examinations) but the staff will all be matter of fact about it & talk you through the procedure. It will be over before you know it.
