Hi. I'm now 11 weeks post chemoradiation treatment and life is good. I have a PET scan in 3 weeks but waiting on my MRI date. I'm pretty much back to normal after treatment, apart from intimacy with my partner. On my Oncologists advice, I began using my dilator 2 wks post treatment, I began with size 1 and quickly moved through the sizes to 3 which feels comfortable. My vaginal length has not been compromised with radiation but it feels like I may have scar tissue on the internal left hand side' as it feels it very uncomfortable when attempting to use size 4. My husband has tried to penetrate me but he can't get in! Am I being over optomistic and expecting to much to soon. Have others had a similar experiences? What's normal 3 months post  treatment? I'll speak with my oncologist when I next see her in October. Thanks. Bev

  • Hi, to be on size 3 is very good only 3 months on from treatment. Are you using lots of lube? I use water based 'Yes' lubricant. Maybe you need to continue with the dilators for a while to continue to break down the scar tissue before attempting sex again , speaking to your Oncologist is a good idea. If you search for threads entitled 'vaginal stenosis' on this site there have been quite a few discussions about people's experiences x

  • I also meant to say to search in this group  for discussions on dilators. The Anal Cancer Foundation also have a video on vaginal stenosis and discusses specialist therapists who break down scar tissue manually should this be required. No one really discusses the far reaching implications about your sex life when you’re going through treatment and it’s a topic that does need bringing out in the open. X

  • Hi 1 in 1500.Thank you for both responses. I've found a lot of older posts that cover this subject in more depth, it's all really useful and relevant. Bev

  • I second the lots of lube comment!  I have a natural oil massage candle that works really well and has a sense of eroticism to my own practice.  I'm six months post treatment.  I, too, have a little scar tissue so my PT said to work on it.  I have noticed some stenosis and I find that making sure there is enough foreplay helps before actual penetration.  Be optimistic!!  It's fun working at it;).

  • Thanks for your fun response.

  • Hey,  I finished treatment at the end of April and despite using the dilators I can’t get past size 3 and have not managed sex at all.  Prior to treatment my vagina was always small as I have always needed the small spectrum for any examinations.   I am going to speak to my oncologist at my next appointment to see if there is a possibility of a procedure to help with this as it is so painful.   Good luck to you

  • Hi Matilda 24.Thanks for your message, I hope that you have some success at your next appointment. Bev

  • Thank you lovely, I will update you on any further suggestions the Oncologist may make.  I understand that there is a procedure that can help but with the way things are at the moment I think this won’t be a priority! xx
