I was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 years ago. I had a lumpectomy first then opted for a mastectomy as the cancer was in surrounding tissue they took out originally. Had 6 rounds of chemo and then radiotherapy and later had an implant put in to replace the expander.

Now find myself with reconstruction failing as the implant has turn 90 degrees and skin is thin so plastics are considering the diep flap.

im worried as it’s a long op and not sure what really to expect. Also worried about taking time off work and being paid. I have no date yet so it’s on my mind constantly so came on here to see if there’s anyone who’s been through it or can give good tips on how to cope.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear that your implant has failed. It's natural to be worried when you don't know what to expect so can I suggest that you join the very friendly breast cancer group where you can share the experiences of lots of women who will have gone through this procedure.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
