Really late diagnosis

Hi there,

I've had this hard itchy purple lump on my arm now for probably two years. At first I thought it was an insect bite, then I went to the doctor about it and she told me it was a dermafibroma. Then it got bigger and so I went to the doctors again and they told me I should have gone to hospital a long time ago, and that it was almost definitely cancerous. I can't believe I left it so long and now I can't do anything apart from google different types of cancer. I feel like I know it's bad but not how bad, and I have no idea how to think about anything else or go about my day. I'm 25 and now I feel like I won't hit 30. I can't believe I've just let something so obviously cancerous grow on my body for so long. \

Just here to meet others and try and find a way to deal with the anxiety and panic.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Online Community but sorry that you needed to find us.

Our bodies do make this living thing had work at times and the diagnosis time frame you have experienced is not that unusual and indeed I experienced the same diagnosis journey and was told I most likely had my type of cancer for years, but that was 1999 and I am here talking with you and doing great so don’t over think this.

I see from your post to our Nurse Team you have been referred to get some further checks to be done - this is good.

The one important thing you don’t do is use Dr Google, talk with medical professionals as Google will feed your anxiety and stress.

The Nurse Team will get back to you soon.l with some professional help.

It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information and support or just a listening ear. Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00.

The Community has many support groups but best not go down rabbit trails until you know more but we are here to help out once you have a better idea what you are dealing with.

Do come back on this thread at any time ((hug))

Thanks so much for responding and so quickly . It really helps. It's so easy to get lost without anyone to talk to and any way to put it in perspective! I think I will call MacMillan now. Congratulations on your journey :) I hope I can be as supportive in 20 years time.

  • Call the Support Line is a good step as it does help ‘talking’ with someone.

You may also find Online Information and Support Section  a good place to find information covering cancer diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.
