Hey we’re new to this but my mum was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer at the beginning of November after being found collapsed with a brain tumour.  It’s all been quite a shock to us (I have a sister who is younger than me we are 39 &35) and taken some getting our head round, although mum has been told it is not terminal they have said that’s the fight is upto her they managed to remove the brain tumour, we are still waiting to hear what kind of treatment she will have but the last week it appears to me and my sister that mum has already given up and is not willing to fight, she sleeps most of the day.

she is living with us right now and we are hoping that she will go back to her flat which is across the road from us but we can’t see this happening with how low her mood is right now, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with there loved ones me and my sister are desperate for her to fight and it’s causing stress that she is giving up so easy.

any advice welcome?!

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community, a Community that no one really plans to see themselves joining, and so sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis.

An incurable cancer diagnosis brings a lot of confusion, stress and many questions. I was diagnosed back in 1999 with an incurable but treatable blood cancer but you may find talking with other people who are on the same type of journey will help a lot.

The Community is organised into support groups you may want to have a look at our supportive Lung Cancer group as this is the place where you will connect with others walking the treatment journey both as a patient or family.

Follow the above link then choose ‘click to join' or ‘join’ when the page opens.

You can then introduce yourself, post questions or just  join in with existing discussions by clicking on 'reply'.

You may also find our Carers only, Family and friends (I see you joined) and Supporting someone with incurable cancer groups a great benefit as you will connect with others supporting family through their cancer journey.

Its always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support or just a listing ear.

Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available.

You can use other methods to contact our Support Services (LINK) and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

Our Online Information and Support Section  is a good place to find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.

    All the very best.

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that your mum has recently been diagnosed with a brain tumour and secondary lung cancer. I know what a difficult time this will be for you all.

I can see that you've already found and joined the family and friends group and I'm going to suggest a few more for you to think about joining. The first two are the brain tumour group and the secondary lung cancer group where you can ask questions and share experiences with others who either have this type of cancer or who have a loved one with it.

The third group is the carers only group which is a safe and supportive place to share your worries and emotions with other carers.

To join any or all of these groups just click on the links I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

Macmillan have lots of useful information that you can access here and you might want to have a look at supporting someone with cancer and also this information on just been diagnosed.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your mum's  journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you need any help finding your way around the community just give me a shout.
