Hello all,

I am hoping to find others who have a similar experience to me rather than scaring myself with google!

my gp has referred me urgently to a haematologist. After finding that I have low blood platelets (confirmed with a second test). they also found swollen nodes in my neck. As I went to the docs for chest pain, this is obviously a shock.

The doc taking my med history has said I also have the following symptoms; bruising, bone pain, night sweats, chest and neck pain, extreme fatigue and weakness And pale.

However, my white and red cell count is fine. Has anyone else had low platelets whist the rest of your bloods were normal?

As a mum to young children, I’m ever hopeful that this might have a more innocent diagnosis.

I would love to hear your story if you have had a similar experience.

Thank you all in advance x

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

It's good that your GP is referring you to a haematologist to find out what's causing you to have low blood platelets.

While it's natural to worry that it could be some form of cancer there are probably other reasons for this too. Has your GP suggested it may be cancer and do you have a date to see the haematologist yet?

  • Hi  and a second warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community.

The fact that you have been referred to a Haematologist suggests your GP wants to find out why your Platelets along with your other symptoms are presenting. This can point to one of many blood disorders including one of the very many types of blood cancer.

I was diagnosed in 1999 with one of the many types of blood cancer but I am in remission and doing great - hear me when so say that blood cancers are very treatable with great results. But I will always say until someone says you have a blood cancer - you don’t,

You will have to expect a lot of tests and a period of waiting until you get a clear answer.

This link below gives you an idea of the test road you may be on.

Hi Latchbrook, thank you for the welcome.

yes, my GP has raised Leukemia as a possible cause but ruled out lung cancer as I’ve had a chest X-ray already to check for lesions.

Im so hopeful of a different outcome, given my white blood count is fine. But every day that passes I seem to be getting worse.

hopefully my referral letter will be here Monday x

  • As your GP has suggested leukaemia as a possibility you might like to join the leukaemia group on the community where you can ask questions share experiences and get support.

If you'd like to do this just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post your questions in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

I'll be keeping everything crossed that it's not cancer

Thank you TheHighlander, it’s great to hear that you have had a positive outcome and that blood cancer is treatable. When anyone mentions Leukemia it always seems so scary so it’s definitely good to be positive.

I guess I was hoping somebody would say that without a low white blood count it definitely can’t be Leukemia.

im very positive it could be a good result for me x

Thank you, I will update my info now. I will probably wait to join the group until I have a diagnosis, until then I would feel a fraud I think!

fingers crossed and thank you for being so lovely x

  • You would be welcome to join the group before a diagnosis as the community is here to support people at all stages.

  • Hi again, no one can honestly say that having low Platelets is down to an of the very many blood cancers but yes, it can be for a lot of them along with other blood disorders that are not cancer.

Blood cancers like Leukaemia and indeed my rather rare type Lymphoma can be scary and hard to treat so I would put a ‘stress and worry warning’ on reading some of the journeys people have been on and as best as you can stay away from Dr Google.

You are referred to a Haematologist and they are the experts not Google..... or even us who have had a blood cancer.

The one thing you can do is now start a daily record of how you feel, symptoms..... even a photo record of raised nodes (I did this as they were very visible as they grew) and when you have your appointment you have this to refer back on.

Do keep in contact and we are always around to answer any further questions I also see you have posted a question to our hires team so you will get a professional reply as well.

    ((hugs))
