Today my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. She has previously had breast cancer (5 years ago) and bowel (20 years ago) and beaten them both.

They have found nodules in a lung, which have grown over the last 4 months, and a shadow on one of her vertebrae.

At this point the doctors aren't sure whether it is secondary from the breast, although she's been 'all clear' for a while now, or if she's just unlucky. A full body CT scan and biopsy will be done soon to make sure it's not anywhere else and to see what type of cancer it is.

My emotions at the moment are all over the place but running through them all is just the absolute unfairness of it all. She's already been through this twice, she's not a bad person, why on earth would this happen to her again?! She's only 65 and has so much living still to do!

As much as my friends are there for me none of them have been through this with their parents.

I'm hoping that others on here will understand what it's like for the family of the diagnosed and I can potentially help others that are going through the same thing.

Thank you for reading, if you still are....

  • Hi Clare  and welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your mum's continual cancer diagnosis - it is not fair and we would all agree with you.

A cancer diagnosis can bring a lot of stress, confusion and many questions on all the family but talking with people who are on the same journey can help a lot.

I see that you have found our very supportive Friends and Family group, we also have our Carers Only group as well. These groups will open up your concerns to a wider audience who know exactly what you are going through at the moment.

Just follow the links I have created then go to the 'Start a Discussion' tab and set up your very own Discussion and introduce yourself to the group and ask your questions.

This site is organised into various groups so we do have lots of support groups that are Cancer specific  and also ones that are general Cancer experience groups.

You may find our various Macmillan Support Line Services to be helpful - call them on 0808 808 00 00 This free service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00 but check the link.

We also have our ‘Ask an Expert’. section where you can post questions to our mostly Volunteer Experts but please allow 2 working days to get a reply.

Our Online Information and Support Section  is a good place to find information covering cancer diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.

Talking to people face to face can help a lot so check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area or a Maggie’s Centre as these folks are amazing.

    All the very best ((hugs))
