Hi everyone. I'm new to the site. My partner was diagnosed with a kidney tumour on 16th dec and offered removal of kidney at the end of January. He was sent for a chest CT on th 19th Dec and we've been waiting 2 weeks for results. It quite unbearable not knowing if the cancer has spread any where else. He results are just sitting on someone's desk and we are trying to be positive. Nurse is on holiday secretary not replied to voice mail and gp says results have been sent to consultant. That sounds like he has bad news for us. He's got a bad cough at the moment which makes you worry more. How do we get hold of consulant?
Hi and welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your husband.
First, the wheels of the NHS does grind that touch slower at this time of the year.
Don’t jump to conclusions as from my experience, if there were things ‘very wrong’ we would get the call’ to come in ‘now’ - even at this time of the year.
You just need to keep trying the numbers and you will eventually get through as the system starts to get back up to speed.
A cancer diagnosis can bring a lot of stress, confusion and many questions on all the family but talking with people who are on the same journey can help a lot.
Can I direct you to this link to our very supportive Kidney cancer group as this will open up your concerns to a wider audience who know exactly what you are going through at the moment.
Just follow the link I have created then hit the ‘Join This Group’ tab just under the main group name, then go to the 'Start a Discussion' tab and set up your very own Discussion and introduce yourself to the group and ask your questions.
As I was the person with the cancer my experience of supporting someone is very limited, although my wife has been amazing over my 20 years. You may also find our Carers Only and Friends and Family groups to be good places where you can connect with others support family through their cancer journey but more importantly the carers care for each other.
You may find our various Macmillan Support Line Services to be helpful - call them on 0808 808 00 00 This free service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00 but check the link.
We also have our ‘Ask an Expert’. section where you can post questions to our mostly Volunteer Experts but please allow 2 working days to get a reply.
Our Online Information and Support Section is a good place to find information covering cancer diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.
Talking to people face to face can help a lot so check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area or a Maggie’s Centre as these folks are amazing.
When you feel up to it try putting some information in your profile. This really helps others when answering. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. Just click on YOUR username, select 'Edit Profile'. Put as much or as little in your profile and you can amend it at any time - you can see members profiles by hitting our forum names.
All the very best.
Thanks thehighlander. It is so helpful to talk to someone. I will send a few emails off for monday. It is provoking when the hopital,is deserted not even a receptionist. Even the gp is still shut. The frustrating bit I knowing how busy service will be on Monday. I can see what the stress is doing to him. He doesn't want to tell kids yet until he knows the ct results. We are stuck in the doldrums I guess.
Yes, The waiting is so frustrating and stressful.
Up in the Highlands some clinics actually start back on Friday and I know that our main hospital do also run some clinics over every weekend so you never know who may be in?
Do join the group and put up a post as you will connect with people who understand this journey, my 20 years has been with a rare type of blood cancer and this has had me in hospital of the Christmas/New Year period so I do know that some staff do come in.
The one thing we learned is that regardless of how much we dress and grey it will mike no difference to what the consultants say so try and save your energy for that meeting g - also start putting ALL the questions you want to ask on paper so you fldont end up leaving the appointment wishing you had asked x and y.
All the very best ((hugs))
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
