Hi I’m new to this site just looking for some help as I don’t seem to be getting anywhere with online search. My son was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma at the start of 2019 this led to me having a lot of unpaid time off work while he was having treatment. We did have critical illness cover which we received but now my sons treatment has finished we have been looking for new cover as we found out he is no longer covered on our policy as it only pays once per child. We could have got a new separate policy with beagle street for child critical illness but it did not include cancer. Does anyone know were we could get full child critical illness cover for people who have had cancer before? Any help would be great thanks.
Hi and welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear that your son has been diagnosed with HL.
A blood cancer diagnosis brings challenges in many ways and as you are seeing closed doors are often the case. I have lived with NHL fir over 20 years so do understand some of the issues Lymphoma can bring.
I have tried and can not get any critical Illness cover so have given up but you you may find our various Macmillan Support Line Services to be helpful - call them on 0808 808 00 00 This free service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00 but check the link.
We also have our ‘Ask an Expert’. section where you can post questions to our mostly Volunteer Experts but please allow 2 working days to get a reply
Can I direct you to this link to our very supportive Hodgkin lymphoma group as this will open up your concerns to a wider audience who know the treatment journey your son is going through at the moment.
Just follow the link I have created then hit the ‘Join This Group’ tab just under the main group name, then go to the 'Start a Discussion' tab and set up your very own Discussion and introduce yourself to the group and ask your questions.
((hugs))
Hi
sorry to hear about your son. If you have had a critical illness it is very difficult to get any new cover that will also cover cancer again. With an adult it is often 5 years in remission before a provider will consider life cover and normally at least this time until they will look at critical illness cover. Sometimes you will get cover with exclusions.
Uunfortunately even after 5 years it is likely to be at an increased level of premium which can often make it unaffordable.
I had acute lymphoblastic leukemia with a transplant over 6 years ago and many providers still won’t consider me for life cover and the ones that will are estimating large increases in premiums. They won’t look at critical illness. I have spoken to quite a few providers as I am a financial adviser.
With an adult the product providers statistically look at the risk of the disease returning and aren’t prepared to offer cover. Also once premiums go above a certain rating level (rating is how much premiums are increased above the normal level) the cost of the cover V the cost of the payout becomes excessive and they won’t offer terms.
Children’s cover is normally an add on to an adults plan and as such won’t cover and pre existing conditions.
Your son may have to wait until he can take out his own policy and see if providers will offer him terms in the future.
Paul
You can speak to someone in confidence by calling Macmillan Support on 0808 808 0000 - 365 days a year 8am to 8pm It's free from mobiles and landlines. The friendly team are waiting to take your call.
Thanks for the reply Paul. I thought that would be the case of an increased premium if any cover was offered at all. Just a bit worrying that there is likely no insurance cover available for potentially 5 years it just seems like insurance company’s just wash there hands with you as soon as they hear the word cancer which is wrong. I’ll keep looking and making inquiries. Thanks again
Thanks for reply Mike . It’s really worrying that it’s so hard to get insurance again this was so vital for us as during my sons treatment I was off work for a long period unpaid I really hope that he will never need to have any treatment again but it’s just an added worry that we no longer have this cover in place. Thanks again mike.
