Hello,

I have a brain tumour that is at the moment stable. I have been given the green light by the neurologist to travel to France. Is EHIC sufficient? Private insurance is prohibitively expensive. Thanks

Hi and very warm welcome to the online community and good news about your brain tumour being stable and hopefully remains so for the foreseeable future.

The EHIC card is meant to supplement travel insurance not be a replacement. Producing your card will give some routine treatment as you would expect in our NHS hospitals however if the only hospital you could get treatment was a private clinic then your EHIC would not be recognised, if you became ill and needed to be repatriated back to the UK your EHIC card would not cover any repatriation charges.

Our Travel insurance forum for cancer patients group members regularly update a list of insurers that have offered reasonable insurance cover and I would invite you to join the group and have a look at ongoing thread for information.

As a side note if the UK were to leave the European Union at anytime your EHIC card probably would not be valid.

I trust that the above answers your question, if you have any other points you would like answered the Travel insurance forum for cancer patients group members are all very friendly and knowledgeable and will eagerly give you advice.

This may also be of interest to you Travel Insurance information from Brain Tumour Charity.

    Hi Lehm002

I found Boots Travel insurance were really good and I got cover for travel to the US with them, which is often more difficult that getting cover for Europe. This was after a number of other companies refusing me cover. Hope this is useful.
