Hello Everybody
My name is Jenny 67 yrs and I am new to the community.
I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in Nov 2016. Had 8 Sessions of Chemotheraphy and was due for debulk surgery. Unfortunately a few day’s before Surgery I was informed that the Anesthetist Review on me has determined I was a very High Risk Patient with various risky commodities and the Surgery was refused. Yes! I have other illnesses one of which is life threatening called Addisons Disease where my Adrenal Glands had packed up and stopped producing ADRENALINE the Stress Hormone. As you all know the Stress hormone is vital for life keeping my stress levels at a minimum. The lack of this hormone had a detrimental effect on my body. The only treatment for this is Corticosteroids the replacement hormone for Adrenaline for the rest of my life. Therefore I have for over 20 years been on Hydrocortisone a corticosteroid. Without this medication I could end up unconscious in a coma and pass away silently. Addisons also caused me to have an under active Thyroid.
unfortunately the Steroid treatment comes with side effects. This has caused the onset of various other illnesses eg Diabetes. I am an insulin dependent diabetic. I have had a silent heart attack which has damaged my left ventricle, and have been fitted with a defibrillator. Excess Steroid has caused Osteoporosis. Couple with a few other illnesses I was diagnosed with Cancer in Nov 2016.
In view of my complex medical illnesses I was deemed unsuitable for debulk surgery and considered as HIGH RISK FOR SURGERY. It was reported that I would die on the Operating Table or within a month of the operation.
Both my family and I was totally devastated and looked elsewhere for treatment. I had a successful private operation and had a partial hysterectomy where they removed ovaries and Fallopian tubes in India in September2017, defying all odds and now living to tell the tale.
Unfortunately after monitoring progress post operation they have found in Sep 2019 another mass referring to Secondary Cancer of the Ovaries. I cannot understand the logic of terming it Ovarian Cancer when I do not have my Ovaries. They are not sure where this mass has actually originated. My cancer marker is also low at 7.
The mass apparently is lying between my Cervix and Rectum. Apparently the Surgery for a second time is deemed dangerous due to the bladder or the bowels could be damaged which means I would be with a STORMA bag for the rest of my life. I am not happy at this prospect and looking for other treatments.
I am seriously considering Laser Beam Therapy, Cyber Knife Therapy, or Proton Therapy.
Can someone please enlighten me on these treatments ??
Many Thanks
Jenny
Hello Jenny and welcome to the community, although sorry to hear what you are going through and the decisions you have to make. I cannot answer your questions as I have no knowledge of this, but could I direct you to the Ovarian Group where the members of that group may be able to offer some advice. Click on the link to get to the group. You can then join the group and start a new discussion. It may be an idea to copy and paste your above post in the group to save typing it out again. You may also like to do the same in the Ask a Nurse section where you should get some expert advice. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.
Dear Jenny, I am sorry to hear of all the things you are going through. I also did not get the de - bulking operation , my choice, and I see you got yours done in India. Would you recommend it? If you look at my introduction under short friend you will find that I am on "wait and see" just now, get a scan and the results on December the 6th. This forum is very friendly and welcoming and people here have helped me through some low patches with their support, ,humour and advice. I was wondering if you knew of another forum only for people who have ovarian cancer? It is also welcoming and full of experienced people with good advice. If you are interested in "ovacome " go into "Health unlocked" on your laptop, or whatever, and you will find many different cancer groups there one of which is for those with ovarian cancer. It covers the UK and United state and I think you may find some answers there. I wish you every success with your research and hope you find a treatment that suits you. I may be doing this myself soon if I don't get good results at the next case meeting will let you know if I discover anything helpful or new. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing and message me if I can support you in any way.
With love and gentle hugs

Hello Pat
Many thanks for your informative reply. I will definitely be logging into Health Unlocked to seek alternative treatments.
My Surgery in India was very good. I was Well looked after. The Medical Team-were absolutely experienced and Thorough. Due to my complex health issues, I had a Team of 5 looking after me and they were all in the Theatre with me. The Gyne-Surgeon Oncologist, the Anesthetist, Cardiologist, Endocrinologist and my Oncologist. I had a Pet Scan done and blood tests. In the UK I was fighting the Medics for survival. I owe my life to my school friend her husband and the Medical Team. They were all absolutely marvelous.
Wonder why you decided against debulk surgery ?
My thoughts are dependent on what Stage of Cancer you are at. I think the way forward is to have Chemo shrink the mass and get through Surgery. Be positive, and determined to overcome this hardship and get a few more years up your sleeve. I was diagnosed with Stage 3 ‘C’ and do not regret the Operation, it gave me a new lease of life for two years. Recuperating took a month or so. The only down side was the side effects of all the chemo I had both in the UK and India has brought on issues with my balance and mobility. This I find is a small price to pay for an extension of life.
I am now looking at other treatments as Surgery this time round would almost certainly affect my bladder and Bowels and I would be fitted with a STORMA Bag. I am not sure if I would be able to deal with it.
Please keep in touch and let me know how you are doing ? Also the results of the Scan ie size and has it affected just your ovaries.
I am a practicing Roman Catholic and would pray for you to have successful treatment to give you a second chance of living.
God Bless You my love and be happy and positive.
Love
Jenny xx
Hello @jennyg52,U sent me a friend request but there's nothing in your profile
Can u pls copy n paste the post u did here into your profile, so that others don't face the same problem? Thanks.
Hi , I had cyberknife treatment on a brain met ( primary kidney cancer) in 2013. Since then I've been on a low dose (0.5mg) of Dexamethasone, as my one kidney doesn't produce enough corticosteroid.
I don't know if it would b suitable for where your mass is . .You'll need to ask someone. Try the helpline on 0808 808 0000 or your oncology team ?.
.Good luck,
Sue
Hello Buttercup
Many Thanks for your inspirational and informative message.
I admire The courage, determination and positive attitude endured during all the Surgeries you’ve had. Despite all you have faced you sound so thoughtful considerate and above all appear to have a cheery disposition to life.
Your reply has infused more positivity and courage into my life. I have always been a fighter looking on the bright side of life, but for some reason was on a downer after my Gyne-Oncology surgeon confirmed it would be a dangerous Op due to the mass lying in an awkward position between the Cervix and Rectum. It would be inevitable for either the bladder and or the Bowel to be taken out and a Stroma bag fitted. Wearing a bag for t rest of my life is something I find difficult to deal with.
I am at the moment researching if Cyber Knife Therapy is the better option to pursue as opposed to actual surgery as it promises minimal damage to the surrounding tissues and organs. I have educated myself on all aspects of this treatment but I wonder if Cyber Knife Therapy has been used for Ovarian Cancer.
I have a scan next Thursday and see my Oncologist this Tuesday I feel another two weeks has delayed the treatment of either Chemo or Radiotherapy to kill or reduce the Mass and anxious the delay could increase the mass by a few cms.
Do you know if Cyber Knife treatment would be available for patients with Ovarian Cancer ?? What effect did it have on the Cancer you had???
Would you recommend this treatment
I need to take a leaf out of your book and remain positive, patient and be content with whatever life throws at me.
Lots of Love
Jenny
Hi @jennyg52, Thanks for your compliments
I'm glad you feel more positive n courageous - long may it continue!
Unfortunately I don't know if cyberknife's suitable for your cancer and where it is, as I had it for a brain met ( primary kidney cancer) . It is commonly used for brain mets.
I can only see ref to it being used for liver cancer in the abdominal cavity - so at least it DOES get used there ( not shouting, but emphasing)
It sorted my brain met, of which there's only an inactive relic left. I had 3 x 20 min sessions for 3 days on the trot, ie 9 in total. Yes, 'd recommend this treatment
You could try ringing rhe helpline to ask them about where in the body cyberknife is used. Their number is 0808 808 0000, open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week.
Should u find out it's suitable for you, you'll need to be referred to a suitable NHS hospital - UCLH in central London, and one in Newcastle plus another in Sheffield all do it. Sorry, don't know hospital names There are also several private hospitals offer it.
Good luck re your scan and oncology appointments.
Sorry, I forgot I'd started answering earlier !!
