Good Morning to anyone reading this
My darling mum has this week been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour (age 67) and we are all utterly devastated. Mum’s only real symptoms were left side paralysis (which has since subsided with steroids). The Doctors have said it is quite large and ‘deep seated’ so an operation to get a biopsy or de-bulk may not be possible. We find out later this week the decision. Should an operation not be possible I do not understand why radiation can’t be given as an alternative option to surgery. To potentially leave my Mum with no treatment plan at all has shocked and upset us even further.
We would like a second opinion but we are not sure the best way to get that and ensure we had all the scans etc.
If anyone had some advice we would be so grateful.
Thank you for listening.
Suggest u ring the Helpline re access to a second opinion

I had a secondary brain tumour treated 6 years ago but no idea if that treatment is suitable for a primary. If it is, come back n I'll tell u more. I(had Cyberknife. there's also gammaknife)
U could also join the Brain tumour n Family and friends groups for support from ppl similarly affected.
A community champion will no doubt b along soon to welcome u to the community n give u afew pointers, I'm just another member like yourself.
Good luck re appointment later this week.
Write down your n your mum's questions n make sure someone also writes the answer down to refer to later.

Hi, ring the Helpline on 0808 808 0000 re getting a second opinion. They may also tell u of treatments available. I had cyberknife on my secondary brain tumour 6 years ago. There's also gammaknife treatment. But it very much depends where your mum's tumour is, how large it is etc.
In the meantime, join the Brain tumour n Family and friends groups, where u can get support from ppl similarly affected.
A community champion will b along shortly to welcome u to the site n give u a few pointers. I'm just a common or garden member, like yourself.
Good luck re appointment later in week. Write down your n your mum's questions n make sure someone also writes the answers down, to refer to later
Let us know how it goes pls.
Hi and a second welcome to the online community
I'm really sorry to hear that your mum has just been diagnosed with a brain tumour. Being given a cancer diagnosis will be a huge shock to everyone including your mum and it's perfectly normal to want to do everything you can to help her.
I see that you have joined the brain tumours group which is a great place to ask questions about treatment, etc and share experiences with others.
I think that you would also benefit from joining the family and friends group which is a safe and supportive place to share your worries with others who understand what it's like when a member of your family is diagnosed with cancer.
To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself after selecting 'start a discussion' or join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
Your mum's treatment will be planned at a MDT meeting (multidisciplinary team) which may include a neurosurgeon, neurologist and oncologist. Her treatment will be planned using national treatment guidelines and taking into account her general health. If you click on this link you can see how to go about arranging a second opinion if you think this will be helpful.
When you feel ready it would be really useful if could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Thanks Latchbrook for elaborating on what I said
Thank you so much for the quick reply, very helpful and yes I shall post what we get told. We just need to know we can try some treatment and can have some hope.
Thank you also to latchbrook, great info here and I shall join the family and friends group.
What a supportive network this is.
Hi and a second welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your mum.
A cancer diagnosis brings a lot of stress and confusion on all the family but from my long experience, talking with people who are on the same journey can help a lot and will reduce the whirlwind wind that is rushing in your head.
I see that you have joined our Brain tumours Forum. This would be a good place to put up a post and ask your questions as you will connect with people who understand the journey your mum is on. You can ask the folks questions about tests, treatments and what to expect during the months ahead.
Follow the link above and join the group (it is worth indicating how you want to receive email notifications when someone answers your posts). Go to the 'Start a Discussion' tab just under the main group name and set up your own Discussion and introduce yourself to the group - you could just copy an paste what you have in this first post.
We do have these forums where you can connect with others supporting family and friends through their cancer journey: Carers Forum, Friends and Family Forum and if required Supporting someone with incurable cancer
You may find our various Macmillan Support Line Services to be helpful - call them on 0808 808 00 00 This free service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00 but check the link.
We also have our ‘Ask an Expert’. section where you can post questions to our mostly Volunteer Experts but please allow 2 working days to get a reply.
Our Online Information and Support Section is a good place to find information covering cancer diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.
When you feel up to it try putting some information in your profile. This really helps others when answering. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. Just click on YOUR username, select 'Edit Profile'. Put as much or as little in your profile and you can amend it at any time - you can see members profiles by hitting our forum names.
