Hi all

i have had one lot of chemo and immunotherapy so far, on 2 December, next lot on 23 December.  Although I have been told I will lose my hair so far so good, but still early days.  My son, who is a hairdresser, had discussed it with his colleague who has experience of clients losing their hair on chemo, and they have suggested I go for a shorter haircut now so it won’t be such a shock when it starts coming out.  I’m not going to have a wig but the thought of just shaving it all off is a step too far.  I have incurable but treatable lung cancer with secondary in my liver.

What did others do?  My hair currently is a chin length bob and I actually love it, but In the grand scheme of things its a small price to pay for a chance of a bit more time with my lovely family

update:  just wanted to thank all those who took the time to respond.  On Thursday I had my hair cut and today in the shower quite a lot of hair came out while I was washing it. I was so glad I listened to your advice cos I kept a lock of hair which I could not have done once it started to come out.  I also got the head scarf recommended by Tiga but in more muted colours.  I didn’t think I would mind it coming out as I had prepared for it but I find that i do mind, but it is only hair at the end of the day.  I suddenly realised that my eyelashes and brows are probably going to come out too - eek

  • Hi.

    Nice to hear somebody here..

I had very long curly hair and when my doctor said that with my treatment even cool cap will not prevent from hair loss I decided to cut them short. My friend's friend is a haidresser and she offered a help. She did cut my hair pixie style. Some people were complimenting till they saw me in head band and realised I cut my hair because of being ill. This cut helped me to get use to have different look.l and hair lenght  I did not go for wig as I always felt awkwardly touching fake hair. They have some head wraps caps for cancer treatment made of silk with internal extra cotton strech fabric layer so bald patches cannot be noticed. I went for this solution and had a couple it different colours to match my mood and clothes. A little pumper up.

I know nhs gives an option for wig.

I believe it is worth trying what you will feel better with as it will vary from person to person.

I wish you all the best on your path and send a big hug in this difficult times xxx

    Tiga.
  • Hi Maz, well..i had very long hair before chemo, and doc said i will loose it, so the day before my first chemo i did get a short hair cut...was a bit strange as i always had long hair. Well i had two different chemos for nearly a year.....and i never lost a hair Slight smile, this was now over 5 years ago, still getting treatment and still have my short hair cut.

  • Hi Maz Welcome to the Group! I was going on a trial drug after diagnosis and was told there was a high posibility I could  loose my hair, although it wasn't chemo. The length of my hair at the time was somewhere between my chin and shoulder. I too like Tiga (welcome Tiga) got my haircut into a longish pixie style and a few weeks later a shorter pixie style. As my hair started to get thinner, I got fitted for a wig, as you could see through to the scalp in many places. I must say, at the time I was quite devastated because I had only told family and a few close friends and imagined that if i wore a scarf everyone would know I had cancer and I wasnt ready for that!

I wore the wig twice in all! The first time for only a few hours but the second time we were away where no one knew me but I didnt feel like ME and it made me very hot! The specialist hairdresser in the local Maggie Centre had given me a few scarfs to try and I ended up wearing them. The one I really liked was quite long, not just a scull cap and I felt it looked like more of a covering for the sun! I didn't loose all my hair which also made wearing the wig difficult as it slipped. I was advised by the same hairdresser to get Plantur 39 Shampoo (green bottle to stimulate roots and help with hair loss). I used it all the time for quite a while but now I use it only once a month as it is around £10 per bottle. For me worth every penny. It took a while but my hair did get stronger then thicker.

Good luck with your treatment (and your hair). I hope you have a very long time yet with your family!

    Love Annette x

  • Hi Maz

Lovely to meet you. Over the last 20 years or so, my hairline has slowly disappeared until now I have a faint area of hair. Now I'd let that grow for around 6-8 weeks up to the point where it's a mess. Then I get a no.1 haircut and then, especially in the winter, my head feels like it's going to freeze solid. Honestly, that's how cold it feels!!

So Maz, for comfort, I'd recommend that you have a few head wraps around.

    Good luck Maz

sorry to cut this short but I have a dental appointment.

    Love life and family.
  • Hi , I understand it’s different for us blokes but after a few rounds of chemo my hair started falling out, whilst I was away at my in-laws, it got to the point where I shaved my head rather than watch it fall out. I got some flat caps which I wore and indeed even since my hair has returned I still wear.  I did find it disturbing seeing clumps on the back of the sofa, shoulders, I then couldn’t help myself but touch my head which would see another clump of hair fall.  I preferred caps which didn’t shout cancer, see if there are any hats that you might like to wear especially if you don’t get on with a wig

Ive always had short hair but since it’s regrown I’m letting it grow longer than I ever have previously

Thank you YoungMan, I appreciate knowing how it happens.  I have visions of a long chunk of hair landing on my knee when I’m sitting - the dog would wonder what on earth is going on!!
