My partner was struggling for 3 months eating and not being able to burp. His doctor prescribed omeprazole and he continued to get worse. He stopped work and told them he could not go back until he felt better. He couldn’t get out of bed, walking to the toilet was a chore. After blood tests he was called during the night by NHS 24 and told he needed an immediate blood transfusion. His haemoglobin was at 5. Two bags of blood and a bag of iron, CT scan and endoscope happened in the following days. We were told on Friday that he has Oesophageal cancer, a tumour that is 9cm long.

Apologies for the length of the story, a few questions...

1. What are folks experience on a time frame from tests to getting a meeting with specialists?
2. Has anyone here know of anyone with a tumour that size and what was the stage?

The waiting is awful, he is in pain and now home with Oramorph and paracetamol.

  • Hi and welcome to Carers although I'm sorry to hear about your partner's diagnosis. Time frames vary between areas so I couldn't comment on that and as I'm not medically trained I would not be permitted to comment on possible stage of cancer. But I do empathise, the waiting is dreadful especially in the earlier stages of investigation. Do call the helpline if you're worried, on 0808 808 0000; the line is manned by experts who are very understanding.

  • Sorry to hear this if you click in to my name you will see what happened to my husband Bill after he was diagnosed with oesphageal  cancer in Feb 2016 . The gullet cancer group are really good to chat to on this website  you can join that group as well as this one . You should have been given a specialist nurse number  at  the hospital ring them ,They will answer any questions that you might have and chase up appointments with consultants. Also ring your g.p they might be able to help with pain control and prescribe supplement drinks if your partner has lost  weight and is struggling to eat.I wouldn't worry about the stage it's numbers really  and only  messes with your head. It's very unpredictable and until you know how  they are going good to proceed it won't really help. Keep posting here we will support  you its terrible  the first few days till you get your head round  it. When you ring the specialist nurse have everything  written down you want to know .Take care and best wishes to you both xx

Thanks Sue, I’ll have a look at your experience.
we weren’t given any phone numbers, discharged from hospital after being told he has cancer and with a bottle of morphine. We are sitting waiting on someone getting in touch with us with no one to ask questions. It’s so worrying and lonely, neither of us know anything about the process. I’m 40 and my partner 45. xx

  • Definately ring g.p tommorrow and tell them how worried you are .If you get your local hospital details up ring number and ask to be put through to oncology its not good enough that you have been left like this .If you get no joy with them then ring the pals dept patient liasion and explain the situation .Often you have to give people a nudge there are so many people being treated you have to keep in the radar .Are you being treated at a local hospital or a cancer center ? .Also as looby loo has suggested ring  the macmillian helpline they are brilliant and you can ask a nurse a  lot of questions keep in touch lots of hugs xx

We aren’t being treated anywhere as yet. He had a hospital admission for low haemoglobin and in the 3 days he was in hospital we were told he had cancer. He was being treated on an admissions ward. So we haven’t spoken to anyone about anything yet, just the doctor and consultant that told us what they seen on the CT scan.
He phoned his doctor on Monday after me pressuring him. They said the specialists like to deal with all things treatment and info related so we would hear from them in due course. We have to call the doctor for any pain relief and they will do that.
So we are waiting until they get in touch with us.
thank you for replying, it really means a lot.

  • You are welcome and look after yourself its tough on everyone .We will support you on here. The carers site is brilliant it really helps dont feel so alone  Let us know how you get on take care x
