Hi all.

My dad has primary liver cancer and has been told that it’s terminal and he is at stage 4a or b as it has spread to the lymph nodes and they expect it to have spread. He is 1 week in to taking sorafenib and up until now has been working and carrying on his normal routine. The last few days he has had terrible pain around the bottom of his rib cage by the liver and his voice is very croaky. The out of hours oncology nurse said his voice is apparently a side effect of the tablets but the pain isn’t. I’m guessing this is what happens but it’s just me and my dad with no other family to help or discuss things with. He is just 66. Luckily I have a supportive husband but he hasn’t been through this either. Any advice would be appreciated Thanks

  • Hi and welcome to Carers. It's heartbreaking watching loved ones go downhill with cancer and so hard to see the changes they go through. The only advice I can give is to take time for yourself; so many of us carers put our whole lives into looking after our loved ones that we end up ill ourselves. 66 is still quite young; my mum had cancer when she was in her 30s but survived until she was 57. Perhaps you could start building a, real or thought-filled, album with good memories of your dad; I found that made such a difference when my dad died, looking back at the times we laughed until we cried.

    Hi,

Thank you for your lovely response and suggestion, which I will do. That’s awful about your mum and I’m sorry for the loss of both your parents. My Step Mother died 9 years ago aged 49 to cervical cancer after fighting it for 6 years and to see the changes is heart breaking. It’s awful taking dad to appointments to the same rooms etc that we went to with her and makes it more raw.

He is going in tomorrow for a blood test as they think the sorafenib maybe affecting his liver function, so we will see what tomorrow brings.

Being a carer is hard work mentally, and it is hard to keep chipper but that is what it takes.

    xx

    Hi,

I’m new to this group and the forum type thing, but just wanted to say your not alone.

My dad has primary liver cancer, although we haven’t been told what stage, just that’s it’s advanced and terminal.

I’m also on my own with him as there’s no other family to help or talk/mull things over with so it’s a lonely road. It’s difficult going to his oncology appointments with him as I like to know all the facts but I can’t ask because I don’t want to upset him.

He was on Sorafenib but it didn’t suit him so he’s now having Lenvatinib and he seems to be doing OK. Sorafenib also made his voice croaky and so does the lenvatinib.

At the next oncology you could ask for targeted pain relief and also is he on the full dose of Sorafenib? We were told it would take at least 2 weeks to have any affect. On my dads leaflet about side affects of Sorafenib it does mention stomach pain so this could be a side affect he’s having?

Wishing you well and all we can do is take it one day at a time xxx

  • Hi and welcome to the Community and to Carers, although I'm sorry to hear about your dad. As his daughter and carer you could chat to his specialist nurse on the phone for the information you'd prefer to have, they are very understanding.

Thank you both for your replies.

We have an appointment next Tuesday back with the consultant to see how things are going, but I had a phone call this morning from my dad to sat he was in agony and the codine wasn’t touching the pain anymore, so after a trip to the doctors he is now on morphine. He didn’t really want to be taking it but has no choice.

we will see what the next few days bring.

    love to you both x
