Hello All,

My sister has Cancer of the uterus and enters Hospital on 4th March for her hysterectomy.  It is her Birthday on March 10th and we will be giving her her birthday present before she goes into hospital.  My wife has bought her a delicate leopard print (sister's favourite pattern) make-up/toilet bag to take into hospital with her.  We would like to put some special treats in there for her and wonder what you would suggest.  We thought of hand cream, and lip salve and maybe a nice face cream but just wonder if any of you found you needed something that you hadn't thought of taking into hospital with you.

Thanks for reading and we look forward to reading your replies.

  • Hello

    Welcome to the Womb group.

I am sorry to hear that your sister has had a diagnosis of womb cancer. I hope that her surgery goes well on the 4th.

My surgery was done via keyhole and was in 2022. I only spent 1 night in hospital and didn't actually use much of what I took with me.

However it is a lovely idea to get her some things to take with her. On the day of surgery there was a lot of sitting around for me- so a dressing gown or cardigan would be useful. Also for when she is back in her room it was good to have some snacks and squash. I found my mouth was dry and also although there was water by my bed it was a case of waiting for cups of tea. It is important to drink plenty so something she likes would be good.

Magazine/puzzle book/ a new book may be nice. Toiletry wise I took a small hand gel and also some wipes to freshen up. I was out of bed and walking around within a couple of hours but it helped to freshen up. I bought some new slippers to take with me but ended up wearing slip on shoes that I did not have to bend down for.

If she is likely to be in for longer then some sort of mild shower gel etc would be good.

During some of my treatment it was suggested to me that I took in a blanket from home and this can be comforting.

  • Thanks for this Jane.  Unfortunately, my sister's situation is a little more complicated as she has a J pouch after having most of  her bowel removed due to ulcerative collitis so will be in hospital for longer.  But yes, shower gel and wipes are a brilliant idea.  thank you.

  • Everything Jane said plus peppermint mint tea bags if she likes it. It can help with any trapped gas but is also soothing and refreshing.

  • Perhaps some new pyjamas/lounge wear type clothes- something comfy and nothing restrictive around her tummy. During my recovery I found thin layers of looser clothes more comfortable.

What about some dry shampoo so she she freshen up her hair on days she doesn't feel up to washing it.

You could also get some of those little travel size empty bottles from the supermarket/chemist and pop some of her usual favourites in them.

  • Thanks.  All great suggestions and have been put on our shopping list.

  • Thank you.  You have all been very helpful.  I shall make a donation to Macmillan in thanks for your help and support.

  • Some wine gums or fruit pastilles or similar to ease post anaesthetic throat dryness/soreness and to freshen the palate.

  • I've just thought of something else, reflecting on my time in hospital...a cheap watch. I put it on once I was on the ward. It saved me from having to turn around to look at the clock on the wall, and actually, thinking about it, I work in a hospital and a lot of the time the clocks aren't correct! I just found it useful to know the time and to track when I could next ask for painkillers.
