Hi, I'm just wondering other people's experiences with mirena coil,
I've had it since begining of February and I'm suffering with pretty bad cramps almost daily.
I know cramping can be a side effect but I'm really getting sick of been in pain now, I thought it would of settled, I have no bleeding just slight spotting, Ibuprofen and paracetamol don't even ease the pain.
I did have it changed a week ago because the first one was either not put in properly or my body was trying to expel it.
So is it just not agreeing with me ?
Thanks
Hi, Sorry to hear you're having problems with the coil. I'm no expert and only have my personal experience to go on, plus advice from my team really. Firstly, you say this is your second coil - and you're having problems again right?
The second one is only in a week, so that's not really long enough to tell whether it's OK or not. You say the last one might not have been put in properly or your body was trying to expel it. Sometimes these things happen and there's nothing to say it won't happen again but I would give it more time before giving up on it. In my case I did have some pain and bleeding for months on and off but nothing I couldn't cope with. Now, after 6 months most of it's settled down and I only get a little spotting or very mild period-like pain every month or so. If your womb lining is thickened, it will bleed to thin it down but you shouldn't be in terrible pain. It might be that it's not suitable for you but the only way to tell really is over time - and if the pain gets too bad, I would seek advice from your hospital team or your GP.
Maybe you could request an ultrasound scan to check whether or not it's still in place, rather than having it removed?
That would confirm if it's in place at least, without removing it and give you a bit more time to see how things go. It must just settle down in the next few weeks - and I hope that it does improve for you. Let us know how it goes.
That sounds a nuisance but how long have the coil in? It takes some months to settle for some women. Mine's been in for over 8 months now, with very few issues. I even had a good result after my last scan and biopsy. The results were that the lining is now 4mm (normal) and almost normal endometrium. I just need to lose more weight now! I hope things settle down for you soon. If you are younger, pre-menopausal, they could always try the tablets instead maybe...
Hi Missaurora
It maybe worth asking for a scan to check for ovarian cysts.
Regrettably I had liked the bleeding and womb thickness improvements mirena gave me, but had to have it removed after it caused ongoing cysts on each of my ovaries which were very painful with nerve damage.
Hi, sorry to hear that.. I also have cysts on my ovaries but now I take Metformin for diabetes it seems to be having a positive effect and the cyst pain is almost gone. Apparently, sometimes this drug is given to stop ovarian cysts - even for those who don't have diabetes. Perhaps you could discuss this with your team to see if you could keep your coil in ?
So sorry to hear of your 'incurable' cancer situation. However, my late father-in-law had 'incurable' prostate cancer - and lived 15 years. Not trying to give false hope but everyone's journey is different - but we are all on borrowed time....the very best wishes for a good quality of life for you.
Im doing a lot better with the coil now, I do still get cramping some days but it is bearable.
I have one more biopsy in August and if thats clear they will not biopsy me again and assume the coil is doing its job.
Unfortunately I have been told it is coil for life or if I chose to get it removed biopsy every 3 month and a hysterectomy after I have a child. Even though I always knew this it's still hard news to hear whenever they tell you. (Obviously I was told any of this is my choice as its my body but it is reccomended).
Need to lose weight as a lower bmi reduces the chances of low grade cancer or the pre cancerous cells returning.
I sometimes cant believe this is what im facing at 30 years old but I can do it and I am managing pretty well.
Thanks everyone and wish everyone the best.
Sounds OK but I was told that 'if' the I had 2 clear biopsies I could try having the coil removed and just be monitored for a time to see how it goes. I was never told 'coil for life' though but I guess everyone's experience differs. I am post-menopausal and intend to have it removed at some point if possible as I don't want this in forever lol!
I know it means constant monitoring though, which is no picnic. Good wishes.
