Hi Arla

I’ve started a new thread on this one. You asked what the HOPE course was? Well I am not entirely sure as I start it next week so will perhaps know more then. My understanding is that it’s a small group of people who have completed treatment with 2 facilitators. The course runs over 6 weeks for 2 and a half hours. I think the course has a week by week focus and was developed between MacMillan and a University. A friends sister did it and said it was really helpful - so that’s all I know! I’ll report back :)

Just some info from the main site if you're interested.....

What is H.O.P.E.? (Helping to Overcome Problems Effectively)

When living with cancer it can be easy to lose sight of just how capable you really are.

HOPE is a self-management programme, developed by Coventry University and Macmillan Cancer Support. HOPE courses are designed to help people become more knowledgeable, skilled and confident in managing the physical, emotional and psychological consequences of living with and being affected by a cancer.

HOPE uses activities, such as goal setting, action planning, mindfulness and gratitude diaries, to create an upward spiral of positive emotions leading to improved confidence, social support, happiness and well-being.

This free course is led by people who are also living with cancer and/or health professionals.

What participants have said about the course:

"Since starting the HOPE programme, I realise that I’m not alone with my fears and concerns – I can see things differently now, which helps me to be more positive about the future, whatever that may be" (Kath, HOPE programme participant)

    Who is it for?

People who have had a diagnosis of cancer.

    How long is it?

Six, 2½ hour sessions running over six consecutive weeks. In addition the course starts with an information/taster session where participants can meet the rest of the group and help decide the final course content.

What will I get out of it?

The opportunity to learn and share with people who are also living with cancer and to refocus on your inner strengths and develop your resilience.

    Hi star sky,

It sounds like it will be really helpful, I wish I'd heard of it after my op. Good luck when you start, I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on.

    Lots of love

    Thanks Lass,

It looks really good for after treatment finishes and you feel back in limbo, I'll try and remember to refer people back to it.

    Heya,

It doesn't have to be only after treatment has finished, it can be while you're still going through it all. I was supposed to go on one in November, but it clashed with something else I was doing so I asked to go on the next one. They've never got back to me, so I don't know if there just hasn't been one, or if they've forgotten about me. lol

    :D

I'm looking forward to the course, starting next month. I had treatment for womb cancer late in 2020 and have moved from the south of England to Merseyside so am thinking I might make some new rriends as well as learning new ways of coping.

  • This sounds interesting how do you get on to it? X

Hi , I contacted our local Macmillan Information & Support Centre after I moved to a new area. I have been having difficulty getting my care transferred and was desperate for some help in navigating the many NHS Trusts involved. On speaking with the staff at the centre they asked if I'd find the HOPE course of interest - I said yes and they have since contacted me to offer a place starting shortly.

  • Thanks for that  I might ask my macmillan nurse if she knows anything about it. X

I had a call from one of the course facilitators this week - our HOPE course starts on 8 June and runs for several weeks. The group consists of 8-10 people who have had treatment for a range of cancers and each session lasts an afternoon. Apparently, we get a workbook to complete - am looking forward to starting!
