Hi.
So I’ve been showing signs of vulvar cancer, it’s been going on for about a year but I just brushed everything off. As I have a lump on my perineum that’s been gradually getting bigger over the course of a year.. I thought I’d google symptoms and it obviously linked to vulvar cancer. To make things worse, I’ve had a hysterectomy due to HPV high risk and CIN3. Soooo I’ve finally plucked up the courage to go and see the nurse this morning and I’m a bit deflated!
she barely examined me, she looked at the lump but not my vulvar which is all patchy red and white and I have like a dark patch of skin that wasn’t there before... and she just kept saying oh it’ll be atrophic vaginitis... so I was like eh... but I don’t have a dry vagina... and I’m not in menopause... my vulvar is sore and itchy and I keep getting water infections... but anyways she wants to try me on this suppository thing for my hormones.... is this normal?! I was genuinely expecting a full examination and a referral especially with my history?

  • Nurses are not trained in vulval disease so please make appointment with your GP , could be VIN , lichen sclerosus or vulva cancer.

  • I agree with Clare, contact the practice manager for your GP surgery. Tell them you are not happy with the nurses diagnoses, and you want to see a GP.

Thanks for your reply I appreciate it

  • I agree with what other people have said you should see a doctor not a nurse. I had similar symptoms to yourself and the Dr tried me with some cream which didn't work so she then referred me to my local hospital for a detailed examination (which I got within a few days). An examination plus a biopsy was done and then a scan. I then had an appointment with a cancer specialist at the UCH and  another biopsy which showed I had a rare form of vulval cancer and within 3 weeks I had a radical vulvectomy with the removal of my lymph nodes and the resectioning of my baldder. After the operation I had chemotherapy and radiotherapy and now 18 months later I feel  absolutely fine and no recurring symptoms. If I were you I would ask to see a Dr for a second opinion just to put your mind at rest, better to be safe than sorry. Hope you get on okay and keep positive.

    Hi thanks for your reply!

The nurse actually rang me yesterday (after results on a swab for STI’s which came back clear) and she’s putting me on this hormone suppository thing, I’m 31 and definitely not going through the menopause!!
Anyhow, she wants me to do these for a few months and then if it doesn’t work, will send me to gynaecologist. Is this similar to what happened with you?
Also, I’m bipolar so I’m not sure if messing with my hormones would be a good idea?!

You just don’t want to question a nurses ability to do their job though, do you? When I started asking questions I could feel she was offended and it made me feel bad.

ahhh I dunno. I think I’m just venting. It’s scary and to have this looming over me for the sake of just getting it checked quickly is ludicrous.

ps. I’m so so glad you’re feeling better! Xx

  • I would make a appointment to see a doctor and not a nurse. As you have a lump and skin changes and also high risk hpv you should have a biopsy.

  • I agree with ClareB43 you need to see a doctor, or ask to be referred to gynae. It’s your body and you know if something is not right.  We all know how important early detection is on these things, and yes you have every right to question the nurse. Every one is entitled to a 2nd opinion. I hate to say it, but if it wasn’t for covid and doctors not doing face to face appointments you would of seen a doctor by now. Sometimes you have to fight for what is right, and you need this checking properly.
