Hello, I am about to start the RAI on Monday and have two small children. I am having to stay at my parents until I can go home. I was wondering from experience how long the radiation stays with you and how long you had to stay in and isolate for?

Thanks Sarah

  • Hi Sarah, I had my RAI last October. My radiation level came down fast immediately following the procedure. Stayed at the hospital only for two nights. I live only with my partner in a roomy home, so the advice I received was to keep distance from him for 3 - 4 days and also not to go out for a further few days. However, this is my case, and everyone’s case is different. The best thing is to raise any concern with the medical professionals, ie. the department that is going to give you the procedure. They are very helpful and understanding. Drink plenty of water during your stay at the hospital. I took fresh lemons with me to mix with water. This helps stimulate saliva glands which could be affected by the procedure. All the very best on Monday!

  • Hi Sarah

I was in for 3 nights, when I returned home I slept separately from my husband for one night but was fine to be out and near people the following day. I also shed the radiation quickly, as well as drinking loads, I showered twice a day and washed my hair. The worst thing was being isolated so take loads of things to keep you occupied - I read 2 books during my stay. Hope all goes smoothly

  • I was in hospital for 2 nights then when I returned home I had to sleep separately from my husband for 7 days and stay away from children and pregnant women for a further 9 days.  You will be told how long to avoid people etc before leaving and will be dependent on the dosage and how much is left in your body.  It does seem that it differs a lot between hospitals.  Good luck for Monday @Sjk5101.
