Hi All

i first found a lump in my testicle at the end of July and the process moved very quickly as I had it removed on the 1st of June.
2 weeks later  it was confirmed that it was Non seminoma stage 1 and will require 1 round of Bep Chemotherapy. The chemotherapy started on the 2nd of August with the 3 day intense course with 2 further follow up sessions over the next 2 weeks.

I finished everything on the 17th of August and now on the recovery plan for 5 years and starting to feel better everyday but still about 70%. my employer is asking me to come back to work on a phased return but I am still getting tired very quickly and wanted to know how people have coped going back to work and how soon they went back post chemotherapy?  I am 38 years old if that makes any difference.

  • Hi.

What kind of work do you do Evers? I only have a single cycle of carboplatin, so a much lighter treatment than yours.  I was off work for a month, and my employer would have been fine if I'd taken longer.  I work a desk job, and my manager lost his wife to cancer and was obviously very understanding. He unofficially put me on light duties for a few more weeks.

It sounds a bit soon for you after your heavier treatment. What does your doctor recommend?  If you feel like a phased return wil be ok then fine, but don't be pressured.

    Best wishes

    1. I am a business development manager but I am able to work from home. The  initial discussion was to only do administrative duties from home my worry is that as soon as I start that then they will be asking me to do client visits and back full time quickly. I am signed off initially until the 22nd of September but I think they want me back next week they have been great with being on full pay etc so I feel torn on what to do.
  • I think you can still use covid as an argument for limiting yourself to wfm for now. In reality your immune system is probably pretty good already, but it won't be 100% for a while.  Just tell them your doc advised not to do home visits until 3 months after your treatment finished. Your GP will back you up if necessary I'm sure.

  • Hi Evers!

Glad you are on the mend! Like Teahupo I only had Chemo-Lite (one dose of Carboplatin). This was on the 27th Jan this year. I work from home but took 6 weeks off as I was exhausted / headaches etc. I was put on a phased return where I did like 10 hours a week then this increased gradually over about 6 weeks until I was at full time hours. My company arranged a call with an occupational health doctor who recommended this approach. Luckily my work have also been fantastic.

I’m 47 by the way and although I’m 99% better I still take the occasional 1-2 hour sleep in the day and have more aches and pains!
