Hi there,
My 36-year-old husband saw a consultant today after a whirlwind of a couple of weeks. The consultant is 99% sure he has a malignant tumour in his right testicle. He is booked in for a CT scan on Tuesday morning and we are waiting for a call to tell us when his orchidectomy will be after that. The mass is about 2.5 x 3 cm big, I think, and is vascular, which leads me to believe he could be at a greater risk, but I'm speculating. The consultant wouldn't really comment on that at this point. I suppose we'll know more after the test/op results come back.
The consultant also said that if you had to pick a type of cancer to get, this would be it as the cure rate/prognosis is so good, so that's something. Even though we were kind of expecting this diagnosis, based on his symptoms and the little info the GP gave prior to the consult, it still a bit of a shock.
Anyway, here for support and to listen to others.
Thank you.
Hi Sacha22
Sorry that you find yourself here. My husband has a very similar story. He is 35. His GP refered him for an ultrasound . 30 mins after hospital scan, his GP phoned to say pretty sure cancer. We then saw consultant 10 days later. He confirmed he was also sure as could be was cancer. Then he had bloods taken, a CT scan 6 days later and his orchidectomy 19 days later.
He is now 9 days post surgery. Recovery is slow and painful. We are now waiting for the histology report for staging and the plan for further treatment.
The journey is really quite slow but this forum is great. Taking one day at a time is the best advice I can give you.
Wishing you and your husband best wishes x
Hello Sacha,
Welcome on the forum however sad to hear the reason you needed to join us!
If you have any questions or concern please post it here and here is always someone "experienced" who can can help or support you.
I know it sounds silly and somehow shocking but yes TC is the best cancer to get! A lot of time doesn`t require any treatment other than the surgery itself! And even if needs treatment I can say from my own experience (had Testicular cancer and a relapse of it) that treatment is really manageable and it is extremely effective!
There is almost always cure at the end of it! 98% survival rate is the best we can have!
Wishing you all the best!
Please keep us updated!
Regards,
Huni

Thank you for the positive words.
My husband is booked in for his orchidectomy on Thursday and has to be at the hospital at 7 am. I think he was told it would be day surgery. It probably varies, but do you you have any idea how long patients are usually kept in after the procedure? We have two small children and no family nearby so we need to figure out how to get him home! Thank you.
Hi my hubby had to be there 11.30. We left 6.15pm.
He will need to eat, drink and go for a wee first.
Our little one is 4 and it’s still hard now (11days post op) keeping her from jumping / running into him where the wound is. They don’t understand bless them.
Best of luck x
Hi Sacha22,
So sorry that you find yourself here but as the others have said, this is a fantastic community of support and no better place to go to with questions/ worries etc.
My husband had his orchiectomy in December. He was kept in overnight as his op was in the early evening. I then drove and picked him up. The nurses brought him down in a wheelchair and he was able to manoeuvre himself into the car. We have steps at the front of the house so had to bring him in the back as the steps were difficult. You could still pick him up with the kids in the car as if you speak to the hospital and let them know your situation they will probably allow you to park somewhere for emergencies/ pick ups.
It took my husband the longer 4 weeks ( recovery usually 2-4 weeks) but I think this could be due to the fact that he is in his 40s. He is slim and active but age might have been a factor. Some of the guys on here were going for light jogs and doing shopping after a week so recovery is a very individual thing.
Good luck. Try to deal with one day at a time. This is a very curable cancer. The most important thing is that you must accept help from whoever offers it. Taking care of you in all this is essential as you will be taking care of everyone else.
Hope the op goes well.
Hi Sacha
Sorry you have found yourself here. My husband was 33 when he was diagnosed 5 years ago in June. I was 12 weeks pregnant.
Like you I was expecting it but it was still a shock and scary.
My husband had sperm samples frozen then had his orchidectomy. The pathology showed a mostly seminoma rumour but had a small amount of embryonal carcinoma (fast growing) and there was some vascular involvement but it was contained to testicle.
His course of treatment was either surveillance or 2 rounds of BEP chemo. He opted for the chemo to reduce the risk of reoccurring.
He has been great since. His 5 year surveillance ends in July then he will go to yearly for next 5 years.
We are expecting our second child now.
It is a hard time but please know there is light ahead. If you need to chat feel free to private message me. It’s hard to see your other half going through.
Hayley
Hello, I was wondering how long until your husbands sperm came back? Was it about 3 years? I was trying to look on the timeline but couldn’t tell from your post! Thanks lookin for hope
