Recovering from an orchidectomy - hematoma?

Hi everyone, I have a question following my orchidectomy and this support service seems really user friendly as well as full of friendly users - so I thought I'd ask...

I had surgery to remove my right testicle 6 days ago and recovery has been ok.  A bit of pain was to be expected but now that things are calming down after resting I've changed my dressing and started to move more.  I guess I got a little explorative and freaked myself out slightly when I found a lump quite high up where my ball used to be!  It's not quite the size of a testicle but it's substantial and now I'm squirming around a bit at the thought of it being there and having touched it.  I just read it could be a hematona and this is quite common.  Has anyone had the same experience and can they be dangerous?  should I be worried enough to go to A&E or perhaps call my doctor in the morning?

Much thanks :)

  • Hi, MrStrong and sorry to hear you joined this forum facing TC. I myself did not have problems after the orchidectomy...but I could feel there was like a cord left inside my scrotum. It was tiny, but I then understood this could be a hematoma. It should disappear with time, mine did. But as I said it was very tiny. Best thing to do is report to GP for peace of mind.

    All the best!

Hi Patso and thank you for your reply, especially so late at night!

It sounds very similar actually, it's not too big and it is protruding from above so I think it could be the cord or maybe a swelling on the cord.  Either way I'm going to leave it well alone and run it by my urology nurse tomorrow.

There's something comforting in the simple fact that there's someone out there, not too far away who can relate and take the time to respond.  I truly appreciate your message right now.

    Thanks and all my best

What the surgeons do, is make an incision in your abdomen., then manhandle the testicle up to it, pop it out, pull hard and snip off as much of the tube as they can.

This is not achieved by sensitive gentle manipulation.. Its fairly brutal, and you would be screaming without anaesthetic.

Naturally it leaves a LOT of trauma behind, and post operational lumps are one result. So is localised numbness round the incision where nerves have been cut.

So is a certain amount of shock.

You may not remember the operation, but your body does...

  • ...same here with me - stayed around a while for me, kinda of sore sometimes to touch in a certain spot on the lump.

i also had a strange burning sensation and redness for a while around the scrotum area, plus quite some pain around the scar itself - i ended up with a few infections that required antibiotics - i also had a weird nerve pain sensation when i started to get fit again (cycle/run) up from the scar into the lower ribs that lasted ages - finally it all went away after about 4 to 5 months - so if you get any of that too you now its possible.

Just be wary about signs of infection and get to the GP if you need to, my GP's appointments would suddenly become sameday/nextday when i mentioned i had just had an operation .

    Thanks Itzman,

You're absolutely right.  I'm experiencing quite a lot of localised numbness right now which I'm told may last forever.  It's understandable and manageable.  I was just surprised to discover this lump protruding down (which I hear they refer to as the grape) as I wasn't really given any info on what to potentially expect, post surgery.

    Thanks!

    Hi OutoftheBlue and thanks!

The problem is, like you said, we are not told what could possibly happen during recovery.  I understand that not everyone will experience these things, but a few of them seem common (like the numbness and even this hematoma) so I feel a calm heads-up would have been nice.

I'm sorry to hear about your infections, I seem to be healing ok so far but definitely have a tender spot on that lump the same as you and definitely a light burning sensation between the incision and down to my scrotum - this is what lead me to have a little precautionary 'look and feel' and then I discovered the lump/cord.

I feel compelled to let my urologist know, just in case.

Thanks so much for responding and for making me aware of other possible occurances.

I think the numbness went over about a 6 month period fo0r me. It's common whenever you have deep cuts.

I personally didn't have any lumps inside the scrotum. Just a bit of a mess where a testicle used to be. That went fairly quickly.

  • It is not possible to be a cord as they cut the cord as well as far as they can reach, and somebody mentioned about this here already :) You should be fine, just think positively.

  • Yes it's a heamatoma. I had same thing. It will dissolve in time.

Thanks Tony Soprano, and thanks everyone else.

I saw my urologist yesterday and I was told that it is normal, that everything just gets a bit swollen and enlarged in there but that after several weeks this should disappear.

I appreciate the support.  Tony - great news on the all clear my friend!  Fantastic. Â
