Survival rates

Hi, newly diagnosed signet ring cell gastric cancer here.
had a blockage in the lower part of my stomach into my small intestines which was confirmed as SRC. I had a partial removal of my stomach (75%) 3 weeks ago and I feel I am recovering slowly.
I am not due to get the histology reports until 22/1/26 and this wait is absolute torture.
Stupidly I googled the survival rates for SRC and read 1-5 years, I am still waiting to be told the stage and grade of the cancer, but I was wondering if anyone had been in the same position and managed to survive longer than 5 years?
I also had breast cancer 10 years ago and they are saying they believe this cancer is linked to that. I am just left wondering until the histology comes back and as you can imagine I am going out of my mind.
Any advice or info would be greatly received.
Thanks

  • Thanks Michele,

Did you have post op chemotherapy or any other treatment?

How is your health now? X

  • Just read through your reply, chemo has been mentioned to ne after surgery. Looks like there is no two ways about it. And I was told I might go into theatre not long after surgery been told.

Am already loosing some hair due to chemo but been told will grow back tbh not fussed I was going bald anyway. This experience has kind of lwft me defeated I just have enough fight left in me hence trying to draw hope and inspiration support from folks. Am damn scared I put a poker face everyday for people I love and not want to scare. X

  • Yes I had 4 rounds of FLOT before and 4 more after my operation.
My health is really good thank you… Only thing I suffer from on the odd occasion is Dumping Syndrome, which you will be advised about after your operation…

  • I have read about that, but am sure I will cross that bridge soon. And Amen to the good health by God's grace it only gets better.  I am dreading having no stomach at all, thats my only fear tbh

  • It is a scary thought… I forget every now and then but it’s ok to not have one… I just think it saved my life… be strong!

  • I would say everything that Michele has already said. I had total gastrectomy in April 2025.

The simple fact for me is have total gastrectomy or not be here.

I am in remission and take everyday as it comes. Yes, you do have your down days but looking at google etc just doesn’t help.

I looked for 5 mins then stopped and used my strength and mindset to fight the cancer. I had kidney cancer when i was 3-4 years old, so wasn’t going to let it beat me again.

I have lost weight as expected but apart from when i first had TG then when on  post surgery chemo it has come off steadily. About 3 and a half stone so far.

    Please take care

  • Sorry for the delay in replying and I understand how worrying your situation.

I had a total gastrectomy in February 2021 and I have just had my final appointment with The Upper GI team at the hospital.

Apart from not having the appetite I used to have and a change to my eating habits I lead a normal active life.

I would like to send my very best wishes for a long and happy life.
