My sister was diagnosed yesterday and I’ve joined the forum for information and support.

  • Welcome to our group!  Though not somewhere you wanted to join! But there are lots of people who will support you and your sister through this.
Once you have a clear diagnosis and treatment plan it gets easier. I was diagnosed seven years ago and had chemo and a partial gastrectomy. I now live a normal life something I would not have believed it was possible!
Do you know the stage of cancer?  As that will enable the MDT to decide on the treatment.
Do post questions and someone will offer advice and help?

  • Hi Jac!

    Thanks for your message!

I’m really pleased to hear you’re living a normal life.

The cancer is stage 3 and I believe the plan is chemotherapy but I’ll update once I know more.

  • Hoping for some progress tomorrow. The last few weeks have been so disheartening, especially for my sister to be told last week that she’s stage 4 not 3.

We should find out when her treatment will start over the next couple of days but she says she was told “time is of the essence”.

It just feels all-consuming for the whole family at the moment and is really baffling when my sister looks well and feels okay.

No questions. Just an update, and a thanks for listening!

  • Not the news you wanted but there are a number of people on this group who have a similar diagnosis.  It’s a positive that she is feeling well as it will help her cope with the treatment.
Once you know the treatment do post and others will provide help and support. X

  • My sister is due to start chemo tomorrow. I believe 6 rounds of Folfox.

I’m hoping her being so young and otherwise healthy puts her in good stead of responding well.

it’s been nice to read some encouraging stories on here so thanks to those who have shared their experiences.

  • Hi, my dad was diagnosed recently with stage 4. We were initially told stage 3 and the dr was like the good news is it hasn't metastasised but then via a laparoscopy, they found cancer in the peritoneum. To say we were devastated is an understatement. But I've learnt to just take things one day at a time and deal with current problems rather than thinking of the future which is unknown. Hopefully your sister will respond well to chemo. My dad is also on FOLFOX, had 2 rounds and apart from constipation (which I think is from the anti sickness meds) and a little bit of neuropathy, has handled it well so far. However I know each round can be different but we take it one at a time!

  • Sorry to hear about your dad’s diagnosis. His experience sounds similar to my sisters.

It’s encouraging to hear he’s handling it well and I hope that’s the same for future rounds.

I’ll be spending some time with my sister on Weds so I’ll update after then.

I definitely agree with taking things one day at a time. X

  • Praying for her PrayPray

How old is your sister? I am 39, diagnosed only last week. Don't know what stage yet :(

  • Thank you.

    She’s 42.

She seems to have tolerated the first round well but she has such a lot to contend with. Mainly that the blockage means she can’t eat or drink.

I understand how worried you must feel and hope you don’t wait too long for your next update. Will be thinking about you! X

  • Conscious I’ve not updated for a while.

Round 2 of 6 started today and my sister said she felt pins and needles in her feet within a few minutes of being infused which assured her how quickly it was getting into her system.

This is her 12th week in hospital but I know they’re working on getting her home when they can.

I’ll be visiting tomorrow and will keep you updated but I’m currently in absolute awe at how well she’s handling everything.
