I was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma GOJ in December. I presented at the doctors as I had noticed an occasional problem with my swallow. I had an endoscopy followed by a CT which confirmed the presence of a submucosal tumour at the GOJ. I then had a PET scan. There was no sign of metastatic disease and a tentative plan was put in place for chemotherapy followed by a total gastrectomy and further chemotherapy. Unfortunately at a staging laparotomy a spot was found on the liver and evidence of peritoneal disease present. I am told that this is now inoperable and incurable. I have been offered palliative chemotherapy - CAPOX. I am on the 2nd cycle.

I am a divorced mum of 4. My youngest is 17 years old and lives at home with me. I have 2 granddaughters aged 3 and 3 months. I worked as a Palliative Clinical Nurse Specialist - I have had to stop work. I have to admit that I am struggling emotionally which is my main reason for joining the group.

Thank you for reading.

  • I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis, it must be such shock for you and your family.  I can imagine your work would have been impossible given your own circumstances.

There are others on this group who are incurable but treatable and I am sure they will share their experiences. There are treatments and  has so much knowledge which is so positive and helpful.

You might find the Living with incurable cancer – Online Community support can give you invaluable support from others in the same situation.
There is often a perception that because you are in the medical profession you know how to cope, but I don’t believe that is the case, so do reach out to a Maggie’s Centre or if you live in Scotland, Cancer Support Scotland offer counselling and complimentary therapy for all those affected by cancer.

I hope the treatment isn’t affecting you too much and you are still able to find moments of happiness in amongst the sadness.  Xx
