Hello.
I was diagnosed with stomach cancer In November 24 aged 43 after years of having heartburn and being constantly tired. I am a HCA who put a lot of it down to stress on of work.
In January 25, I did four cycles of FLOT chemotherapy, Had a total gastrectomy in April and now just about to finish the four more cycles of FLOT.
it has been a rollercoaster and it’s only in the last couple of weeks they I have started to lose patience with it all.
Due to the total gastrectomy I get terrible dumping syndrome then the chemo on top just wipes me out.
I have been admitted twice with dehydration and get told to stay hydrated. Not the easy when you can’t gulp fluids. The doctors don’t under stand (this doesn’t include my fab upper GI team)
I have a fantastic family and friends support network and when able I like going to well being centre but I haven’t met anyone with the same cancer so a lot of people can’t relate my symptoms and side-effects.
I feel like I’m having a moan and feeling sorry for myself so apologise. this is the first time I have openly discussed it on a group
Thankyou and all take care
You are entitled to have a moan! You have been through so much! I didn’t have chemo after surgery but I know that others in this group have and without doubt it’s really tough! So you have done so well to get through it! I’m sure that you will start to feel better now that you have finished chemo.
Dumping syndrome is hard but hopefully you will find ways to avoid it and your eating will improve!
Good luck!
Jac
Hello
Your story resonates with me so much. I was diagnosed with stomach cancer in March 2025 then had 4 cycles of FLOT. I had a total gastrectomy in August and will probably start another 4 cycles of FLOT in the next 6 weeks. I’m really fed up as I have dumping and I don’t know what to eat to help it. My dietician has put me on Creon capsules but all I seem to be doing is swallowing medication. I’m feeling very sorry for myself at the moment too. I’ve lost a lot of weight and fear I’ll never be able to enjoy life again.
Take care
Hi, I went through the FLOT following surgery in April 2024, it took a while for me too, it’s very early days for you, just do what you can, some days I just had sips of prescribed ensure drinks which I added a banana to and made my own milkshake with. It will get better for you, it’s not moaning, give yourself a break after what you have been through x
Thank you for that. Some days are better than others and I’m trying to eat food that will help but I keep wanting foods that I used to eat. I know it’s early days but I’m feeling very emotional at the moment and can’t see how my life will ever get back to ‘normal’.
best wishes to you x
Hi, I take the Creon half way through the meal, I alter the dose to suit what I’m eating e.g a slice of toast 2x10000 capsules, a full meal 5 x 10000 caps, but because they are sometimes difficult to get hold of I’ve got a mixture of 10,000 capsules and 10,000 capsules, that’s why I have to gage the dosage. If I just have a biscuit I don’t take any. It’s taken a while but I think I can sort of gage what I need, Too many give can cause constipation not enough can cause diarrhoea, but I don’t get dumping symptoms anymore.
That’s interesting. I’ve only been given the 25000 capsules and have to take 4 before each meal. Unfortunately just now I was eating my dinner and taking some capsules and I was sick as sometimes I find them difficult to swallow.. I’m hoping this will all settle down.
Many thanks
That’s quite different to my prescription, if it’s 25000 capsules and a proper meal then I should take 2 either during or immediately after I’ve eaten. If it’s a snack then I’m supposed to take one. With the 10s I should take 5 with a proper meal and 3 with a snack, but with having both it doesn’t always add up to the same dosage, but like I said I’m taking the amount each time I eat that seems to suit me
