Reliable biopsy result?

I have been seen by a sarcoma service for a biopsy on a lesion in my thigh, they’ve said benign however I worry this has not hit the potential malignant area and my diagnosis is wrong.
Has anyone any experience of a false negative core needle biopsy or a sarcoma centre giving wrong diagnosis?
I have asked for this to be removed anyway hopefully in the next few weeks - however it has been there a year and I am also at risk of a ‘ooops’ procedure as they think it is benign.
thankyou

  • Hi

Sarcomas are quite rare and lumps very common and that is partially why care is centered in sarcoma centers. One outcome of a biopsy that people often overlook is "uncertain" but I have no idea what the statistics are. You could try asking in Ask a Nurse as they may have access to some figures that might be helpful.

  • thankyou for your reply. I have just read a lot about the biopsies only sampling a small amount of tissue for the whole lesion so potential malignancy can be missed.
I have asked for mine to be removed but now they think this is likely benign it will take many months for surgery which worries me about delaying the diagnosis if it is a sarcoma. It has already been a year since first symptoms.

  • Hi

It might be helpful to take a series of photographs alongside something to give scale to see how the lesion is changing.

Essentially that is what the doctors do with my wife - though in her case they need x-rays and for her it is really helpful to see little if anything in the way of progression.
