Hi all

my first post on the forum

I am a 64 year old male and was diagnosed with high grade soft tissue sarcoma in my groin in late April, I started my radiotherapy treatment 3 weeks ago and have 2 more weeks till my treatment is completed.
Has anyone had similar diagnosis and treatment, I am not sure what or how I will feel once it is complete, both mentally and physically

  • Hello Tom609

    Welcome to the Online Community.

I am sorry to see that you had a diagnosis of a soft tissue sarcoma in your groin in April. I hope that your radiotherapy is going ok and you are not getting too many side effects from it.

I had pelvic radiotherapy last summer and found that it was quite tiring with all the travelling back and forth and I also had a lot of tummy effects. After the radiotherapy had finished I did have a couple of weeks where I felt the symptoms peaked but after that things started to improve.

When my treatment finished I expected to feel over the moon but actually felt quite flat. I was relieved that treatment was over but you go from seeing someone everyday or so during the treatment and then that stops. It was time I felt that I actually began to process everything that happened. When you get diagnosed things seem to happen so quickly and you don't have a lot of time to think about it all.

Physically I felt tired and did so for quite a while, it's now more manageable. I was seen about a month after radiotherapy finished by my consultant and it gives you the opportunity to discuss how you are feeling generally and about any side effects that persist.

My advice is to just try to go with the flow and take time to recover. I found that once treatment finished I expected to bounce back and to be able to do everything I used to, straight away. It wasn't the case. It all takes time.

I hope that your last 2 weeks of radiotherapy goes well and if there is anything that we can do to support you, please do ask.

    Jane

  • Hi Jane, thank you for your reply and advice, things appear to be going without too much issue at the moment, I am sure that I will start to get a more severe reaction in the coming weeks, I am trying to continue with my life doing as much exercise as possible, whilst I can
