Hey everyone,
I'm new to the site and have to say I've found it really helpful. I'm 33, female, and not diagnosed with anything but just starting out with some tests to see what's going on. The internet is great for information, but I'm starting to freak myself out more than I already was.
About 3 months ago I noticed a hard lump on my upper-mid thigh (right leg). I noticed it while rubbing lotion on my skin. It is deep down IN my thigh, not up top on the skin's surface and isn't a dome above my skin or anything visible to the naked eye. I have to press down to feel it. It's hard like a marble and doesn't move around when I touch it. I know my body well and this was definitely very new. I decided to wait and see if it would go away, but it didn't. Then, I started having a dull aching pain in that part of my thigh that comes and goes. In the last week it is happening more and now my right knee feels achy too which is odd because I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. I finally made an appointment with my PCP (who is also an internist) and saw her last Friday. On top of the lump, I have been feeling really off the last 2 weeks as well. She examined me and flat out said she doesn't think it is a lipoma and asked me a lot of questions about the pain that started to occur and whether I thought the lump grew in size. I have tried to keep track of whether it grew, but definitely know it isn't get smaller. It MAY have gotten slightly larger, but not anything astronomical. It's the size of 1 or 2 peas. All one solid mass.
She is having me get an ultrasound (happening this Thursday) and she also did some blood tests. I'm meeting with her next Wednesday to go over the ultrasound and stuff since she will have the report them. She said the ultrasound will let us know if its a cyst or hard mass, and then we will go from there. She said it is "probably nothing" but needs to take a better look.
My father died of colon cancer a few years ago and my mother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer just this last Christmas. Naturally, I am worried about this being cancerous. I am getting married in 3 months and it is all a little nerve-racking. I know there are lots of benign tumors and cysts out there, but I can't help but be really anxious.
Should I be worried? Or am I getting anxious for no reason?
Hi everyone, I’m in a similar situation right now with my 5 year old daughter. She had a pea sized lump in her arm which the gp dismissed as nothing and it has taken a few months to get a gp to take it seriously. The lump has grown quite a lot in size. My daughter had an ultrasound last Thursday and a lipoma/cyst was ruled out. Our gp called on Friday to say he was making an urgent referral for my daughter to see a pediatrician. So I’m just waiting for an appointment to come through. I couldn’t help googling, and now I’m worried sick.Â
I am so sorry I didn't see this sooner. I've just discovered that the email alert for a response was going to my SPAM folder. Thank God, my lump was a "nothing to worry about" lump, according to the radiologist the read the imaging. I'm praying that you hear the same result. And my prayers go out to the other person that responded with their young child having a small lump. Hopefully that's a swollen lymph node (due to an infection of some sort) that can clear up.
Penelopebear,Â
I am having problems with this site working on a mobile device. I want to say I saw you post that you had a lump running the length of your thigh? I found a lump on the outside of my right thigh last April. They did an MRI w/o contrast and it said no suspicious soft tissue or boney mass. It’s been a year now and I have noticed it’s got bigger and I notice it when I sit down in chairs at times. Every now and then I will have pains that shoot in my thigh but not often. I have also noticed what may feel like swelling on the inside of my thigh. I was just at curious what your symptoms or signs were.Â
ThanksÂ
Hi Jessica
Thanks for taking the time to contact me, this is my second visit from sarcoma and in the same place, the first 2015 was soft tissue sarcoma that appeared to heal and clear up including 30 radiology sessions at clattbridge hospitalÂ
The second same place but this time on or in the thigh bone, because of the previous operation and radiology the skin was week and damaged each time it was stitched it opened again, the wound is still open this is the eighth month and no sighn of the end insight they have tried the VAC to help with the closure now there is an infection in the wound and the smell from the leakage is compared to something like bad eggs, cabbage, and sulphur I have photos that I will try to upload
Kindest RegardsÂ
Jim
Hi, I have the same symptoms as yourself. Knee pain eye twitches and have a lump in my left thigh and pain in my left leg which i could litterly saw my leg off ! I had a ultrasound scan today and she said and I quote you are right about the lump, you have a layer of skin a layer of fat and then muscle and the the lump has poked up from the muscle and I don’t know why,  but I don’t think it’s sinister  ring your dr in a couple of days for the results, I am now so worried as I know somethings not right , Would they give news ther and then or forward them to doctors?Â
Hope you have had good news x
Hi Everyone,
I'm new here and not sure if I'm posting to general topic or to individual comment but here goes.
I found your thread by searching on line as I have a forthcoming surgical procedure booked for a lump to be removed. It all started about 18 months ago when I was having a lot of pain lifting my right leg to go upstairs, it was hurting badly on the inside of my right thigh due to a long lump deep down inside, not visible from the outside. GP referred me to Physio who needed it several times making no difference a referral to pilates which eased off the pain but did nothing to get rid of the lump. Return visit to GP and referral to hospital for ultrasound and declared it to be benign and fatty lump type thing. Fast forward 12 months and I had a week of bad pain when it was really hurting me just getting up off the settee, a further trip to GP who gave me cocodamol which I took for 3 days and pain stopped. At the same time I got another referral to hospital to discuss possibility of surgery. Just had this and Dr seemed unconcerned and said it was up to me so I decided to have it removed and have forthcoming apt in Sept for the procedure. I am conscious that I am walking wonkily because of the lump although I wouldn't call it painfil. It is about 5 cm long and 1cm across at it's widest.
Reading through these threads, how can Drs be so sure it is benign just by viewing it on ultrasound? I have a few smaller ones in other bits of legs but he seemed unconcerned with these and said I would find them if I looked for them!
Hi Crofty
It's good to hear you are getting it removed, when they do they will probably biopsy it but do make sure that is going to happen. I believe that ultrasound quite clearly shows the difference between fat tissue and tumour tissue, certainly when I had an ultrasound that was when things started moving really fast as the radiographer could see it was a tumour.
Hi Kafupi
Many thanks for your reassuring reply. I will ask about a bipopsy at my pre op meeting.
Hi Crofty!
It sounds like you made the right choice to me. Even if it’s benign, you’re having discomfort and it’s affecting your walking. I would have it removed too.
Someone here can probably give more detail, but from my understanding with experiences of breast ultrasounds and the fatty node in my leg, I believe they’re able to tell based on whether or not they can see through the mass. One of the things they’re looking to see is whether or not it’s fluid-filled or a solid mass. If it’s fluid-filled, it’s a cyst. If it’s a solid mass, it could be cancer and will need a biopsy. I say “could be” because some other things, such as the fibroadenema I had in my breast, are also benign. I hope this helps bring you some comfort! To be certain, you can ask about this at a pre or post appointment for your surgery and ask how they’re certain it doesn’t need to be sent for biopsy.
Jessica
How are you doing Jim? I’m so sorry to hear about your endless battle.
