Initial Tests

I'm so glad I've found this group!

I'm after a bit of advice. After speaking to my GP about a lump in my hand I was referred for an ultrasound.

I had the ultrasound last Tuesday morning and then got a phone call a few hours later to say that they wanted to do an MRI through referral to Sarcoma Clinic at the ROH Birmingham.

ROH called the next day and I had my MRI on Friday.

I have an outpatients appointment this Thursday to discuss the results.

My question is: would the ultrasound have shown that I have a sarcoma? If they have referred me to Sarcoma Clinic - does this mean I have a sarcoma or is it just further testing. I'm assuming the MRI request was based on the ultrasound showing something more abnormal than a cyst. I'm feeling very worried as I've not had this explained to me. I know I only have to wait until Thursday to find out what's going on but I just wondered if anyone had any advice?

Thank you.

  • Hi Kirsty

It sounds like you are on the right path to check out what you have and so good you have been referred to ROH Birmingham since that is one of the sarcoma specialist centres

We do have a quite a lot of information on how soft tissue sarcomas are diagnosed you can see here..Lumps are very common and sarcoma rare so your lump may well be something else but good to hear they are taking things seriously. Whichever do let us know how you get on and if it turns out to be sarcoma what the next steps might be.

  • Thank you Steve. I will report back how I get on on Thursday.

  • Hi I had operation at ROH Birmingham to remove Sarcoma from shoulder, in December 2024 they are wonderful the care I received was the best any one could wish for. Waiting for radiotherapy now. Not sure how I will feel when it starts. Hope you get good news. Have you had a CT scan or biopsy ?.

  • Thank you for your reply. No I haven’t had biopsy or CT scan. I’ve had ultrasound and MRI.

im glad to hear you had a good experience with your shoulder op at ROH and hope the rest of your treatment goes well too.
