Suspected sarcoma but no biopsy

I have had two ultrasounds, an MRI and a CT scan which have confirmed a 5.5cm lump near my bowel/potential connect to or in the bowel. They are going straight to surgery instead of a biopsy. Why would they do this? What kind of surgery can I expect? They won't tell me anything over the phone so I am waiting anxiously for an appointment to come through.

Thank you

  • Hi

Did they mention sarcoma specifically? I ask because they are quite rate form of cancer and in the UK care tends to be centered in a few specialist centers,

For some types of tumor if there is no evidence of spread it can be simpler to remove the whole mass in a single operation rather than trying to get a biopsy - if we look at the pages here surgery is often the single best treatment for sarcoma

Hope you get the phone call soon - just about everyone on here will recognize issues with waiting to hear something.

  • Hi, I had a pain in my right side for some time which I thought was a hernia, but ultrasounds and CT scans found a cyst, but didn’t know what it was beyond that.  It was not known if I had had my ovaries removed during an hysterectomy.  I had an operation in November 2020 and the bowel surgeon was brought in after removing fallopian tubes, etc, and correcting the hernia, because the cyst/tumour was attached to the small bowel, part of which had also to be removed.  Keyhole surgery was done.  Good result and full recovery.  Put on Imatinib as preventative, but made me depressed so stopped after 6 months.  A year later more lesions were found round my waist area which were inoperable so I started a lower dose of Imatinib and have been fine since.  I still have regular CT scans, etc, to keep a check on it.  Whilst all this has been going on I have been waiting 3 years for a hip replacement which is quite disabling and I use a wheelchair in the hope of getting it done soon, but I have no problem with the cancer, which is known as a GIST or gastrointestinal sarcoma tumour.

  • Thank you for your help. Yes I am being taken care of by the Sarcoma team at Birmingham.
