Recent diagnosis and upcoming surgery jitters

Im still fairly new to this whole online support situation but I got told nearly 3 weeks ago I have cancer, however I didn't have a full diagnosis of what type of cancer I have at the time. Luckily, it was yesterday I properly found out I have soft tissue osteosarcoma just below my left shoulder in the armpit, the reason for the cancer is unknown just bolt out of the blue, which is obviously daunting for me especially since I recently turned 26.

I'm due to have an operation in 2 weeks time to remove the tumour along with the muscle that the tumour has grown in which will have an impact on shoulder and arm ability. I just wondering if anyone has had something similar and how people have managed since loosing muscles in a similar place along with whether it has any major day to day knock on effects?

Im full of pre surgery jitters and whether its normal to feel like this?

  • Hi

Being anxious about surgery is so very normal, just signing the consent form where they list possible side effects as death can be enough to terrify even the most robust.

The "plus" in the equation is that there is a whole team involved in surgery and every single one of them has the power to say "I do not believe this is in the best interests of this patient". Perhaps the most involved in this is often the anaesthetist.

Sorry I cannot help on what effects might be in a situation more similar to yours as my wife's sarcoma is very different - gynaecological origin but scattered throughout the lungs so inoperable - but it did respond to chemotherapy and is stable.

When my wife had an emergency hysterectomy she was visited in hospital by the physiotherapy team both about how to take care of herself as she recovered but also about building back up to as near normal as is possible - it might be worth talking to your oncology team to see if they can put you in touch with a physiotherapist to try to help you work out how any problems might be overcome.

    <<hugs>>

  • Hey Hollystripes, how are you?

I am new to this site but your post resonated with me.  I have a 4cm intramuscular fibrosarcoma on my side, just below my left armpit.  I have my first appointment with the sarcoma unit in a few days time, but I’ve been told that surgery will likely be the next step.  I hope you are recovering well from surgery.  If you’d like to share experiences that would be great.

Sending lots of good vibes your way x

  • Hey Fluffybun5,

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis, it's not an easy thing to be told.

I'm more than happy to share my experiences with you if it helps.

I've had surgery already to remove the soft tissue osteosarcoma tumour that I had in my armpit. The surgery was successful in the sense of removing the tumour thankfully.

I've unfortunately had more surgeries on my armpit as the wound isn't healing how it should be but I've been in a specialist hospital who deal with these complications.

Fingers crossed it all goes well with you. Sending positive vibes.

  • Hey Hollystripes,

i really glad to hear they got the tumour out, that’s great news!  Sorry to hear you’re having complications though.  Are you holding up ok?

i just found out I’m having surgery in less than 2 weeks.  The surgeon told me they are going to remove a lot of muscle and it will affect my arm function.  I have major jitters.

can I ask which sarcoma unit you’re under?

  • Hi both

    sorry to hear your news

You said the surgeon said you will lose arm muscle, can I ask were it is on your arm please?

I have a lump On my arm just below my shoulder joint.

I wish you both a well recovery

  • Hi T070

My tumour is on my chest wall, just below my armpit.  My anterior serratus will be completely removed, along with a large part of my latissimus dorsi.

Have you spoken to anyone about what your surgery will involve?

    x

  • Sorry, should have said T071!

  • Hi

thanks for getting back to me

I hope the op goes well for you

we are not sure what the lump in my muscle is yet.

I am going into a orthopaedic hospital On Tuesday and they are taking a biopsy, I will hopefully know what it is after this.

  • Fluffybun5,

I'm under the royal orthopeadic hospital in Birmingham for the surgeries that I've had, I've lost part of the latissimus dorsi since that was where my tumour so I can sympathise with having reduced arm/shoulder function. I'll also be under addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge for radiotherapy once my wound heals up.

  • Hi

this is the hospital were I am having my biopsy on Tuesday.

I hope you have a speedy recovery For your womb so you can start your radiotherapy

    stay strong
