I had a suspected SCC removed from my back 7 weeks ago. I was told that a biopsy was taken and would be sent off to the lab and that results would be 4-6 weeks. I still haven’t heard anything. My GP advised me to chase the results via PALS which I have done but still nothing. Is this wait time normal?
Hi SRC9d22ad and a very warm welcome to the online community
I'm sorry to read that you've had a suspected SCC removed and I know what a worrying time waiting for results can be.
How quickly results come back depends on various things like how busy the pathology laboratories are in your area of the country, which day of the week the multidisciplinary team (MDT) meet to discuss if any further treatment is needed once the results are back, etc. So 4-6 weeks is probably an average but it can be longer.
When you had the biopsy you should have been given a contact number to ring if you hadn't heard in the timescale you were given. If you weren't given a number then the best person to speak to would be your consultant's secretary. You may not have her direct line but you can ask the hospital switchboard operator to put you through to Dr...... secretary. Although she isn't allowed to give the results out, she can tell you if they're back yet and, if they're not, you could ask how much longer they're likely to be.
I hope you don't have too much longer to wait
Anne
Thank you, i wasn’t given a number and it is not possible to contact the department as they have a voicemail service and email address that is not monitored. This did not used to be the case but is due to staff shortages. This is the bounce back message given when I did try to contact them and is why my GP referred my to PALS. Over the last year I have not seen the same consultant twice. Thank you for your reply though. I’ll keep waiting
Having a phone number and email that aren't monitored doesn't sound very satisfactory. Hopefully PALS will be able to help.
