Mohs surgery Scotland

Hello and thank you for accepting me to this group as a new member. I was told I had BCC in October last year.  A lump on my forehead which I have lived with for around 10 years because a previous GP told me it was nothing sinister. I returned to a different GP last year after feeling that it had changed and was referred to dermatology. I had a biopsy in December which confirmed BCC. The consultant was very good at the time but since then I feel as if I have been forgotten about.  I have just  found out that the consultant has taken a sabbatical and now there are only 2 consultants in Scotland that can apparently perform Mohs surgery on NHS.  I have been moved onto another consultant's books but the secretary can't confirm when surgery will be and said that this departure has delayed matters even more.  In the meantime, my biopsy hole has never properly healed and is very prominent on my face. I don't anticipate having surgery this year. This week I enquired about opting for surgery in England but my own GP explained this couldn't be done. I feel I am let down each time I try to take steps to improve my situation and worry that having lived with it so long that it will have spread. Is there anyone else facing a similar situation and is there any other help available?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to our corner of the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I had my surgery (simple not Mohs) for a BCC in England so don't have any experience with the timescale in Scotland, however I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list.

I've done a search of the group, looking for others who live in Scotland, and found that the most recent poster who mentions that they live in Scotland was  . I've 'tagged' them into my reply to you and hope that they'll be able to pop on and chat to you.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hello I'm in Scotland Edinburgh, I had a cancer cut out of my scalp last summer, the margins weren't clear so I have to have Mohs now I have a few more bcc on my scalp now, I saw the surgeon on Monday and he said I'd have to wait a couple of months I hope it's not going to drag out till next year I hope you get called soon.

  • Hi, thanks for letting me know where you're at with all this. I can understand why you will be ahead of me in the waiting list and I hope you get word soon. I feel I'm at a disadvantage because I have never met my new consultant and I suppose, because of that, it's easier for them to put me to the end of the queue!

  • Thanks for taking the time to help me out with the admin! I've updated my profile too.
