I have a BCC that needs removing. I was initially going down the Radiotherapy route but after discussion with doctor who would be performing the treatment she mentioned that I could have an issue with a dripping nose going forward.
I have now asked to speak to the surgeon who performs MOHS as St James Hospital Leeds. I am hoping my BCC, which is on the top right side of my nose, will be ok for this procedure.
As a general questioned anybody else consider radiotherapy as an option?
Finally apologies if I am repeating the same question that has been asked before.
I was offered radiotherpay by dermatologist as an option, but when I saw plastic surgeon he said NO you are too young (73 !!) I had removal one with skin flap the other with skin graft. Mine was at bottom of nose by nostril and above top lip, the other was at top of nose near my eye. Hope this helps x
It wasn't done by MOHS. I went to gp with the lesion by my nostril and then saw dermatologist 8 weeks later, who said he couldnt do anything as needed plastic surgery. I waited 2 weeks for appointment and then a further 2 weeks for operation. By this time I noticed another lesion which was near my eye and thought my glasses had rubbed it, so he did biopsy at the same time as skin flap operation on nose. This operation was start of January. When I went back for check up the biopsy was another basal cell so had skin graft operation on that end of March. Now October and both sites are healed and look good (so I am told). I would mention that this was not done on NHS but privately. Think waiting time on NHS would have been much longer as basal cell skin cancers are not classed as urgent. Hope this helps you. My plastic surgeon did mention MoHS to me but it sounded so complicated and he would have only done the final part of it when the others had done the operation. I felt so confident with him so decided I wanted him to do the whole thing. I was very lucky as he is one of the best plastic surgeons in the East Midlands and so nice too. Here for you to ask as many questions as you like as I know I was in total shock about the whole thing. How big is your lesion. xx
Many thanks for all the information. Hard to put a size to it, at times I have to really search for it but about 2.5 mm. I have thought of not bothering with any procedure but I think that is not areat idea. Regarding the timescales was the removal and skin flap etc. done at the same time as the removal? I know I will find this out later when I meet the surgeon but I just want to be prepared
In my own mind I am looking to have this done end of Jan beginning of Feb so I can hide away and not frighten any children I may meet
xx
Yes both procedcures were done with removal then skin flap or skin graft. once freezing injections were done it was fine. Took between an hour and a half to two hours. Lots of stitches in both. I just sat in a chair like a Dentist, just Surgeon me and a Nurse holding my hand. If you send me a friend request on here I will send you some pictures privately. You won't frighten anyone it isn't that bad but it was mask wearing season when I had it done so my mask hid the nose one. The main thing that was a problem with the skin graft one was that I couldnt wear my glasses for a while. Please don't leave it have it done as soon as they offer you a slot. I thought it would be in a full theatre with lots of people around, but it was very low key and if you can call it "friendly". If you dont mind we asking how old are you. My surgeon said most people who are lucky to reach my age (73) they will get one of these. I am not a sun worshipper and always used high protection sun cream and take care ofg my skin, xx
