Hi

I've had several SCCs surgically removed, also a keratoacanthoma, I'm currently having treatment by a dermatologist for more SCCs, just thinking that perhaps I should be treated by a cancer specialist.  Can anyone adivse please?

  • Hi

I'm sorry to hear that you've already had several SCCs and a keratoacanthoma surgically removed and you're currently having further treatment for more SCCs. As you're probably aware surgery to remove and biopsy a keratoacanthoma is needed as they are similar in appearance to a SCC. However, unlike SCC they are benign.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the second most common form of skin cancer in the UK but are not malignant, meaning that they very rarely spread to other parts of the body. The vast majority can be cured with simple surgery.

Cancer specialists, known as oncologists, usually only get involved when skin cancer spreads to another part of the body, such as when malignant melanoma spreads to places like the liver, etc.

Do come back and let us know how your treatment goes.

  • Good advice above. Apart from excision what other treatment are you having for SCC? I assumed SCC was just removed by surgery and as said an oncologist would only get involved if you had any metastatising (spreading). I believe keratoacanthomas are harmless as that’s what I was hoping mine was but alas it came back as a SCC and have had two surgeries on that to get the required deep and peripheral clear margins.

    Hi Kassy64

I've had six SCCs surgically removed, several shaved away and three frozen.  I also have many more red, itchy lesions on various parts of my body, they tend to explode into larger 'lumps'.  The dermatologist has prescribed a long term tablet called Acitretin, which I've been taking for a week, it's too early to say if it's working.

Many thanks for your reply and good luck!
