Hello, i went to the GP yesterday about a weird bump that's changing, it's about 1cm but feels thick and os sore. The GP took photos and sent them to dermatology, I have now got a specialist appointment on the 11th to remove ssc. Can they diagnosis from a picture? I'm being sent to a private clinic for this procedure. Is this the norm?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to our corner of the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

Although I've had two types of skin cancer, I haven't had SCC but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet from those who have. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

The only way that skin cancer can be positively identified is from a biopsy of the lesion but a dermatologist can have a fairly good idea if it's likely to be cancer or not from what it looks like. If they're not sure they'll remove and biopsy it anyway to be on the safe side.

I wouldn't say it's normal to be sent to a private clinic to have this procedure, but it could be that in your area of the country the NHS is using private clinics to get the numbers of those waiting down.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't turn out to be skin cancer but, if it does, there's lots of people in the group who will be able to share their experiences with you.

    Best wishes
