Scar not healing post BCC

I had a BCC removed from my face almost 4 weeks ago. I have not had any biopsy results through yet so I am presuming that the lesion was a BCC as thats what the dermatologist said at the time.

Until today the scar seemed a little uneven but other than a tiny scab seemed to be healing ok. Today it started to weep tiny bit of blood. I called the GP and they suggested seeing the nurse at the practice tomorrow. My concern is that when I took a close up photo of the scar the unhealed part looks a bit like what the lesion I had removed nearly 4 weeks ago. I am scared and upset and not really sure where to go from here. Any suggestions?

  • Hi

I'm sorry to hear that your wound has started to weep and you've also noticed an area along the scar line that looks like your original lesion.

I looked back at your previous posts and you said that your dermatologist had told you that you should expect your biopsy results to take 6-8 weeks. If your surgery was done 4 weeks ago then you should only have another 2-4 weeks to wait, although I appreciate that this will feel like a long time.

In the meantime I would contact the consultant's secretary and ask if you can see him again as an area of the wound hasn't healed and looks the same as the lesion you had removed. Hopefully, he'll be able to see you quite quickly.

Thanks for the advice. I had been doing ok at staying positive whilst waiting for results. I am away from home with work and this has really knocked how I am feeling. The scar is not neat and The unknown feels quite overwhelming today.

I have called the hospital following your post and they will have a nurse call me back tomorrow. I guess I take it from there and see what is said. One step at a time. I appreciate your response. x

  • That's good that a nurse from the hospital is going to phone you tomorrow .

She is probably a skin cancer nurse specialist (SCNS) and will be able to arrange for you to see a dermatologist if she feels it's necessary.

These things always seem happen at the most inconvenient times. If you'd been at home you probably wouldn't feel so stressed about it all. My minor dramas always seemed to happen on a Friday night when I then had a couple of days before I could speak to my SCNS.

Hopefully your scar will improve with time, four weeks is still very early. I had a scar about 6 inches long on my arm and another about 4 inches long in my armpit after my operations to remove melanoma. Now, you'd be hard pressed to see either of them and I always joke that if I need any hemming doing in the future I'll ask the plastic surgeon who operated on me to do it!

When the operations first happened the wounds looked pretty horrendous but the SCNS was right when she said that they'd settle down with gentle massaging every day, once they'd heeled, with E45.

The hospital rang me before 9am and told me to go see the consultant at noon today.

Apparently my internal stitches dissolving are likely to have caused the trouble. To be honest I forgot that I had internal stitches. The doctor was really kind and used tape to hold the scar together and I felt very reassured. Told me to do this daily for the next six weeks. I was very relieved to understand what was going on. She told me not to hesitate to contact the dermatology careline if I had any further issues. What great treatment!

Thanks for your advice- it really helped me too.

  • That sounds like great treatment, if you'll pardon the pun, that you've had from your dermatology department and I'm glad you're now happy that you know what's going on.

    xx
